Promoting Positive Workplace and Staff Development ("PWSD") in CUHK |
The Briefing Session on Managing Challenging Workplace held on March 5, 2014 formally kick-started the PWSD initiative of the University. Four workshops were organized in May and June 2014 on the two themes: "Building Positive Workplace: Strategies, Skills and Techniques" and "Managing Staff Dissatisfactions". The workshops aimed at promoting positive communication and relationship in the workplace, to prevent and deal with work conflicts effectively, thus enhancing mutual trust and productivity. The University's Grievance Procedures which serve as a formal means of resolving workplace conflicts, were also introduced at the workshops. |

Mental Health First Aid Workshop @ CUHK |
"First Aid" means emergency treatment. It refers to initial rescue and care given to a sick or injured person to relieve the patient's immediate condition in sudden illness or accident before the arrival of a doctor and medical staff. In the face of sudden physical or health condition, implementing "CPR" or "mouth-to-mouth ventilation" and applying Band-Aid and wound dressing are widely known "physiological aid" approaches. But when our body can go wrong, so will our psychological condition. Survey shows that about one in five people in the city has suffered from mood disorders. Hong Kong is a fast-paced city. When we are facing pressure and distress derived from work, family and life, then someone close to us appears to have developed some unexpected situation in mental health, what should we do? Learning "Mental Health First Aid" can come in handy. |

Sharing Session (Article 2): I turned the corner and here I am back on campus again. |
This time I returned to the campus, my identity has changed. Two years ago, I graduated from the School of Journalism and Communication. Two years later I returned as a staff member. The feeling seemed familiar and yet strange. |

Sharing Session (Article 3): Hiking Excursions with Fun |
Hong Kong is not only a very prosperous metropolis, but there are also beautiful hiking trails not far from us. In the New Territories, on outlying islands and even on Hong Kong Island, we can find hiking trails away from the hustle and bustle of downtown, for example, Dragon's Back on the island was named Asia's best urban hiking trail by TIME Magazine, Asia edition (2004). |

PWSD Game: Comments from Ms. Beatrice Hung, Facilitator of Workshops on Building Positive Workplace |
The submissions show that our colleagues understand the technique of 'frame comments in objective and neutral (instead of subjective and evaluative) language' and know how to apply the technique to change the statements. For example, 'tons of errors' is changed to 'accuracy of the writing', 'your report is such a mess' is changed to 'better organization of your report' and 're-organize report in a more systematic way'. Some submissions have added positive elements to the statements. For example: 'You can do a better job', 'I appreciate that you present your report in such a professional way' and 'Your efforts will be highly appreciated by the team'. A number of submissions applied the 'WE' statement technique such as 'we try to solve it together', 'We are a team' and 'Let's print it out the revised version'. Some submissions have suggested ways for the staff to improve his/her performance. All these elements will help to motivate the staff to improve their performance. Very good indeed! Some submissions, however, convey a sense of accusation, for example, 'you failed to…' and should be avoided. |
