The Public Health Humanitarian Initiative (PHHI) and the Asia-Pacific Collaboration for Child and Adolescent Public Health (APCCAPH) within the School of Public Health and Primary Care (SPHPC) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) jointly presented the Health and Medical Humanitarian Assistances Lecture Series on 'The Millennium Development Goals: Challenges and Opportunities Ahead' by Dr Chok-wan CHAN, President of International Paediatric Association (IPA) and Advisor on Child and Adolescent Health of World Health Organization (WHO) on 21 June 2010.
In the lecture, Dr Chok-wan CHAN shared his first-hand knowledge and information on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) adopted by the United Nations. The eighth MDGs were established and targeted for 2015, which was related directly to safeguard optimum health by reducing poverty and hunger, decreasing child mortality rates, fighting disease epidemics amongst other health-related issues. Dr CHAN outlined the progress, the current state of affairs and achievements to date. He also analysed underlying factors and potential reasons for the success and failures in the past and endeavour to outline challenges and opportunity as well as their possible solutions for the remaining five years towards 2015. In addition, Dr Chan stressed the critical role of the national health policy and strategy in strengthening health systems and delivering effective interventions in an integrated approach to accelerate progress towards the health MDGs, with a special focus on the health of women and children.
Dr CHAN is a leading child health advocate who received Outstanding Achievement Awards from the Federation and Medical Societies of Hong Kong (2003) and from the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine (2007) for his leadership, pioneering work, innovative concepts and achievements in modernizing the medical profession in Hong Kong.The PHHI aims to provide technical support and assistant to help individuals, communities, and countries in need of building public health capacity and capability. The APCCAPH was established for the betterment of the health status of children and adolescents in the Asia-Pacific region; with current research areas include aspects of physical health such as injury and violence prevention as well as aspects of psycho-social well-being such as addictions and risky behaviours.
