Since 2011, selected CUSCS Higher Diploma students have been offered the opportunity to study for a semester at Peking University together with their students from the Chinese Department. Sam was among the 13 Higher Diploma students who was given the offer last year. Others included Peach Lo and Tang Lap-kwan.
Sam found that the programme boosted his motivation to learn. Sharing her experience, Peach said that students at Peking University not only studied hard but also kept abreast of current affairs. "They raise critical questions in class, and their everyday conversation shows their thorough understanding of current affairs," Peach added. She used to think that people in the north of China are rude. However, her perspectives towards northerners have changed. "All the people we met in Beijing and in other provinces were so friendly and welcoming," Peach said.
Lap-kwan commented: "Beijing is a city for book-lovers. Everyone loves reading, and they read a wide variety of books. I decide that I would read different types of books to attain a global perspective."
The exchange programme has certainly had an enormous impact on students who took part in it. The programme not only changed their attitude towards studies, but also made them shine during university admission interviews. Upon their Higher Diploma Programme graduation from CUSCS, Lap-kwan will continue to study at the School of Chinese at HKU, Peach will further her Chinese studies at CUHK, while Sam will be articulated to study Chinese at the Lingnan University.
Dr. Clarence Yau, Senior Lecturer of CUSCS, said that Peking University is renowned for its Chinese Language programmes, and CUSCS students are privileged to have the opportunities to study there which greatly benefited them for lifelong learning. Dr. Ella Chan, Director of the School, led a delegation to Peking University in May to extend the agreement for two years so that more students would be enriched from this valuable and meaningful exchange programme.
