On 14th September 2012 began the first class of the Capstone Course GESH4010. Students are organized in groups of six to participate in the first of four discussion modules, each of which covers three weeks, with lecture in the first week and two discussions afterwards. Discussion topics include: ethical meaning of work, social meaning of work, managing work, leisure and well-being, good work in Hong Kong and academic profession. Students are expected to complete readings and suggested preparatory works before class. After each discussion module each student submits a piece of individual writing to express their thoughts, their response to the readings, discussions, and lectures.
S.H. Ho College's general education falls into two parts. The first part is an induction course for freshmen, named GESH1010 Orientation and Outreach. The other part of the general education programme is the capstone course for graduating students. For senior year students entering a life of work, GESH4010 intends to be a bridge between formal university education and work life. The goal is to broaden the concept of work beyond vocation, by developing a deep understanding of the nature of work and its broad array of possibilities. Throughout the course, students would be directed to appreciate the many realms of life experiences over and beyond work towards the focal concept of a productive life.
