The Society in collaboration with the Department of Japanese Studies organized the annual 2-day event of Japanese Cultural Festival on 28 & 31 March in Cultural Square. Supported by the donor Mr. Mike Mizoguchi, the Festival of this year had a wonderful programme featuring shows, performances, booth exhibitions. Booth exhibitions featuring the traditional Japanese snacks and games, as well as a Japan's prefectures (todoufuken, or "都道府県") were set up on both days.
The Festival commenced with a grand and entertaining opening ceremony, followed by the traditional Japanese dance performance for which two members of Konokai ("香の会") performed in wafuku ("和服") and folding fans (sensu, or "扇子"). Visitors were particularly attracted by the kendo keiko (practice, or "稽古") and kendo kata (forms, or "形") performance conducted by a teacher and a student of Japanese Studies. 300 tasty hand-made rice balls (onigiri, or "お握り") came in four different flavours were sold out one hour after the Festival started. The booth featuring the traditional games "ring throwing" and "shooting" found in Japanese festivals (matsuri, or "祭" ) was packed with visitors.
"We are glad that our visitors enjoyed themselves at the Japanese Cultural Festival," said Vincent Kong, the President of the Japanese Studies Society, "and we will uphold the tradition of promoting Japanese culture through Japanese matsuri."
