CUHK School of Public Health and Primary Care Alumni Association Established

This is the first time I am serving as the President of the School of Public Health and Primary Care Alumni Association (SPHPCAA), and I regard it as a privilege to write a message to our members in this Newsletter. The new executive committee was elected on 30th March, 2009. We would like to express our gratitude to Professor Sian Griffiths, our honorary adviser as well as Professor Martin Wong and Professor Eliza Wong, our founding members for their tremendous contribution to SPHPCAA.

On behalf of the SPHPCAA, I would also like to take this opportunity to send our warm welcome to all new core committee members who has joined the executive committee this year. As the President of SPHPCAA, I am honored to be invited to join the Committee to work and contribute my best effort to unify all past graduates of School of Public Health and Primary Care which is formerly known as the School of Public Health, The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Our first and foremost tasks of the executive committee this year is to serve the following objectives:

  1. To promote the image of the School and realize our mission as public health professionals in encouraging continuing education / professional training in relation to the public health to the community at large;
  2. To liaise and work collaboratively with other organizations and individuals who are interested in public health management and administration so as to enrich the experiences of our members and the School;
  3. To substantiate the contributions of public health professionals to the community;
  4. To promote the culture of mentorship among people interested in any disciplines of public health;
  5. To promote and extend the interest and impact of any organisations concerned with the promotion of public health, and speak as required on any subject related to public health;
  6. To promote public health research by all possible means;
  7. To do any other things that are incidental or conducive to the attainment to any of the above objectives;
  8. To raise money for the purpose of the Alumni Association, and to conduct such appeals on such conditions in such manner as it may consider fit; and
  9. To promote activities organised by the Alumni Association by either publicity and/or educational activities with its objectives as the Alumni Association think fit.

Last but not least, it is exciting news that the first undergraduate programme in Public Health has commenced this year at CUHK and I congratulate all those students who have enrolled in this exciting programme. With the assistance and guidance of the staff and alumnus of the School of Public Health and Primary Care, we are planning a forthcoming mentorship programme with the current students and we shall meet one another in the upcoming activities of the Alumni Association.

Finally, I am pleased to announce that we have waived the entrance fee this year after discussions within our executive committee meeting; may I urge you to continue supporting our Association by applying for membership of SPHPCAA and I look forward to meeting you all at our coming activities!
