Mr. Elbert Lee, the Founding President of the Medical Society, shared with the audiences the vision of the Society through explaining the design of the society logo: to serve with heart, with 'home' as the foundation. Dr. Ho also reiterated the importance of 'home' during his speech. "S.H. Ho College is home to all college students and members, where they experience intimacy, fraternity and mutual support," he said.
With authentic doctoring as the theme of the night, Prof. Sung and Prof. Chan pinpointed the importance of listening to patients instead of solely regarding them as fragmented biological parts. Prof. Sung reminded the medical students to be doctors with heart and soul by referring to William Osler's famous quote "The good physician treats the disease; the great physician treats the patient who has the disease." Prof. Chan also highlighted that the art of listening should not be taken over by technical skills and procedures. "In the old days," he said, "medicine students were taught by sophisticated apprenticeship via observing how their mentors listened to and interacted with patients." Following the speakers' hearty sharing on promoting humane interactions with patients, Prof. Joseph Sung, Dr. Tzu-leung Ho, Prof. Samuel Sun, Prof. Francis Chan, Prof. Thomas Leung, Prof. Chan Kai Ming and some medical students came onto the stage to share with the audiences their musical talents. The dinner reached the climax.
After the musical performances, Master Sun gave a closing remark and thanked Dr. Ho, Mrs. Ho and staff of the Medicine Faculty for their generous support to the society and the performances. He encouraged the medical students to facilitate health service programmes and embrace the challenges that they might encounter. The inaugural annual dinner came to an end, but the melody and joyous memories linger.
