The Engineering team of the faculty has claimed victory at the Robocon Hong Kong Contest for the second year in a row.
Held on 26 June at the Data Technology Hub in Tseung Kwan O, the 2022 Robocon Hong Kong Contest featured 14 competing teams from 8 higher educational institutions. Following 4 intense rounds, CUHK’s Golden Striker team clinched the Championship and Best Team Spirit Award, while Power Builder won 4th place.
Billy Chun-wa Yip of the T Stone Robotics Institute led both teams at this year’s Robocon, while computer science major Tong Tsz Hin and mechanical and automation engineering MPhil candidate Fan Chun Yin served as co-instructors.
Organised by the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation with The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers and the Hong Kong Computer Society, Robocon 2022 took the traditional game of Lagori as its theme. Originating in southern India, Lagori can be traced to a 5,000-year-old Hindu religious text called The Bhagavata Purana, in which Lord Krishna challenges his friends to the game. To win, one team must build a stack of stones while the opposing team attempts to knock it over with a ball.
At Robocon, competing robots garnered points for successfully stacking or knocking down coloured foam blocks within the game’s 90-second time limit.
CUHK’s Golden Striker beat The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology’s Fiery Dragon in the final round after facing off with opponents from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and City University of Hong Kong, among others.
Golden Striker will go on to represent Hong Kong at The Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) Asia-Pacific Robot Contest, to be hosted in New Delhi and held online this August.
CUHK’s Engineering teams have a stellar track record in the Contest’s history, having represented Hong Kong at the international contest four times. In 2019, CUHK’s team was crowned Champion of the ABU Asia-Pacific Robot Contest in Mongolia, becoming the first Hong Kong titleholders of this competition since its launch in 2002.
