In his welcome speech, the College Master, Professor Kenneth Young, expressed his deepest gratitude and appreciation to all benefactors and mentors for their unfailing support to the College's development over the years. He wished that students participating in the Mentorship Scheme would benefit from the sharing of real-world experience and wisdom of their seasoned mentors; while scholarship recipients would have the chance to express their gratitude to the donors in person, and let these benefactors know how they were growing in the College environment.
Mr David Chu in his speech recalled the development of the College since its establishment in 2007. On behalf of the Committee of Overseers, he extended his heartiest congratulations to all scholarship and certificate recipients. He wished that students of the College would dedicate themselves to serve the community and contribute to society while enhancing their knowledge and pursing their studies at the University.
The College Mentorship Scheme received a good response this year. A total of 15 mentors from different walks of life have kindly agreed to share their knowledge, experience and provide guidance to 21 new mentees who are students majoring in different fields. In addition, there are 77 students continuing in the Mentorship Scheme, making a total of 98. The majority of new mentees met their mentors for the first time at the Ceremony and enjoyed in-depth conversations at Lanson Terrace during the tea reception afterwards.
With the kind donations from various donors and friends of the College, a total of 39 scholarships were presented to students who had achieved academic excellence in 2014–15; 18 scholarships were also granted to students in Year 2 and Year 3 to support their participation in outbound exchange programmes or overseas outreach activities. Four students recognized by the University for outstanding performance in General Education were also presented with certificates at the Ceremony.
To show appreciation to students who had devoted time and effort to organizing College activities and programmes, certificates were presented to members of different student organizations including The First Representative Council and Executive Council of the Student Union; The Provisional Residents' Association; The Second Student Honour Code Committee and the CW Chu College Service Team (2013–14).
Mr Wang Shijie Mike, a Year 3 student majoring in Energy Engineering, delivered the vote of thanks on behalf of scholarship recipients. Mike received the Winbridge Scholarship and the CW Chu Foundation Scholarship from the College this year. As a founding student of the College and former active member of the Student Honour Code Committee and the College Service Team, Mike shared his views on university life and expressed his sincere gratitude to donors and to the College. He said '…we are not just confined to our study, but have been offered opportunities to learn and to grow as well-rounded persons. Particularly, for me, it means stepping over the language barrier, the culture shock, and fitting into the diversified university life…I believe that my fellow students have also shared similar experience in either extra-curricular activities, or exchange programs, or both, so that we appreciate the scholarships for enabling us to make the best of our university life.' He believed that the generosity of the donors and the scholarships offered would encourage award recipients to strive for academic excellence and inspire them to give back to the society in the future.
