Won the Second Hong Kong Humanity Award

Professor Martin Chi-sang WONG, Assistant Professor of School of Public Health (SPH) and Department of Community and Family Medicine (DCFM), Dr Yiu-kai AU, Advisor of CUHK-SPH Public Health Humanitarian Initiative and Dr Ning FAN, Year 3 part-time student of MBA programme in Health Care have won the Second Hong Kong Humanity Award which is co-organised by the Hong Kong Red Cross and Radio Television Hong Kong.

Professor Martin WONG has participated in voluntary services for 20 years, serving chronically-ill patients and other vulnerable groups in Hong Kong and mainland China. He is currently the Chairman of both the Steering Committee and Executive Committee of the Regeneration Society in Hong Kong. He has also taken steps to promote a multidisciplinary service for chronically ill patients and organised more than 100 patient support groups. He has been the Chairman of the Organising Committee for 'Ten Outstanding Warriors of Regeneration' for eight consecutive years. In 2003, Professor WONG initiated and subsequently founded the Hong Kong Healthcare Professional Seminar Association and since then served as the Founding President to strengthen the awareness and spirit of caring for chronically-ill patients in the local community.

Dr Yiu-kai AU started serving the society since 1980s. Starting from 1997, Dr AU has set up the Hong Kong Wheelchair Aid Service with his other colleagues to provide assistance to those disabled and elderly on wheelchairs. Since 2002, he has been the medical volunteer of both Hong Kong Red Cross and Medecins Sans Frontiers to serve distressed population in countries such as Liberia, Indonesia, South Sudan, Thailand and mainland China. Dr AU is never shy from offering his network to support training and placement of young doctors and healthcare workers. He serves as a career and training mentor for young clinical and health workers who are interested to pursue a career in medical humanitarian work. Dr AU has been nominated by Professor Emily Ying-yang CHAN, an Assistant Professor of SPH and DCFM as well as the awardee of the First Hong Kong Humanity Award.

Over the past few years Dr Ning FAN has joined a number of Hong Kong Red Cross relief operations around the world as a professional medical volunteer. After the 5.12 Sichuan earthquake, he went with the first Hong Kong Red Cross medical team to Sichuan Province to provide emergency medical services in Beichuan County. As the President of Medecins Sans Frontieres (Hong Kong Office), Dr Ning FAN participated in the humanitarian relief works in the Gaza Strip in early 2009. He is also involved in the relief work of the Hong Kong SAR Government Flying Service on a voluntary basis. Dr Fan enthusiastically shares his experiences serving regions such as Sri Lanka, Kenya and Sichuan with other medical workers.

The Second Hong Kong Humanity Award Presentation Ceremony was held on 2 May 2009. The Hong Kong Humanity Award co-organised by the Hong Kong Red Cross and Radio Television Hong Kong is the very first award of its kind in Hong Kong. It aims to give tribute to those live up to and put into practice the spirit of humanity. The awardees have served as a paragon demonstrating how people can care about others out of pure voluntary and disseminating the spirit of humanity to different sectors in our community.
