語言學及現代語言系創立於2004年,過去十年,教師團隊由成立之初的十數人發展至今超過20人。本系早年由英文系及歐洲語言委員會的部分教員組成,其後鑑於學術的發展趨勢,大學高層認為有必要設立一個獨立的學術單位,從跨語言及比較的角度來對語言的普遍特徵進行科學研究,而非僅僅注重英語、中文或特定的語言。我們的教師專攻比較語言學 (包括語音學、音系學、句法學、語義學)、一語獲得和二語獲得、雙語研究、手語語言學、語言的認知神經科學等方面,並以研究這些領域見稱。我們研究香港本土語言及中國境內語言,理論重點在於揭示語言和心智的特點和原則。系內負責現代語言的老師不但在法語、德語、韓語及西班牙語方面做出了顯著的教學成績,近年更擴大所教授的語種,開設了阿拉伯語、香港手語、意大利語、俄語及泰語等語言課程。學系剛成立時,修讀現代語言課程的學生人數為2,060人,到2013-14年為4,700人,增加了超過一倍。

語言學本科課程反映出我們系的核心理念。我們致力提高學生對於語言結構、語言獲得及語言使用的敏感度。所有本科生必須修讀一門英語語法和一門粵語語法或普通話語法的科目。他們還須修讀最少9個學分的現代語言課程,以提高他們對語言多樣性的認識。學生接受系統的語言學基礎訓練,以掌握各種語言學概念,用於分析語音系統、句子結構以及語義與形式的界面。除必修科外,學生可從一系列的選修科中選讀有關一語獲得、二語獲得、雙語研究、手語語言學、計算機語言學、神經語言學、應用語言學及社會語言學等科目。整體而言,我們系的教研工作,強調語言學及現代語言之間的跨學科聯繫,以及語言學老師之間的跨領域交流。
文學院裡面一些具有傳統的學系,如哲學系和歷史系,都有超過五十年的歷史。相比下,語言學及現代語言系是一個十分年輕的系。香港這個城市對那些沒有立竿見影功效的學科歷來不重視,要在這樣的社會歷史條件下發展一門如語言學這樣的學科,殊不容易。在學科發展的長河裡,十年的光景只是短暫一瞬。縱然如此,同仁在各自的專業研究領域都已經做出了積極的貢獻,他們個人以至學系整體都獲得一定程度的肯定。近年QS世界大學語言學排名榜上,中文大學一直列在前50名;在最新一次QS世界大學排行榜上,現代語言課程更獲得世界第11名的佳績。我們知道,這些大學排名具有內在的偏差,所顯示的數據往往無規律可循,所以我們不會把這些排名當作忠實反映我們系成就的指標。它只不過顯示,我們正在努力不懈地朝著學系的目標邁進。
