Global Scholarship Programme for Research Excellence-CNOOC Grants 2012–13

The Global Scholarship Programme for Research Excellence-CNOOC Grants is designed to enhance research excellence at CUHK through building and strengthening the University's ties with leading research universities and institutes around the world and to increase the visibility of CUHK as a world-class research university through student and staff mobility.

The programme supports CUHK's junior faculty and PhD students to undertake short-term research visits at a selected group of leading research institutions listed in the programme guidelines. In addition, it supports PhD students from those institutions to undertake short-term research attachments at CUHK. The programme details of each category of applicants are highlighted as follow:

Eligibility and terms

CUHK Faculty

  • Applicants must hold a full-time appointment at CUHK and should normally be at Assistant or Associate Professor rank substantiated within the last three years or on a type of contract [Type K1 (SX)] that may lead to substantive appointment in the course of employment at CUHK.
  • The research visit shall last for a minimum of four weeks. It shall be carried out and completed between 1 September 2012 and 31 August 2013.
  • Each award is valued at HK$20,000 for a 4-week activity or HK$30,000 for a 6-week (or longer) activity.

CUHK PhD Students

  • Applicants must be registered full-time PhD students at CUHK at the time of application and during the research visit. Priority will be given to applicants who will be in their 3rd or 4th year of study when they undertake the visit.
  • Applicants should preferably possess a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or above.
  • The research visit will last for a minimum of three months and a maximum of six months. It will be carried out and completed between 1 September 2012 and 31 August 2013, and prior to the submission of the final thesis.
  • The value of the award will be based on the duration and destination of the visit. Normally the amount will range from HK$15,000 to HK$50,000.

Visiting PhD Students

  • Applicants must be registered full-time PhD students at one of the institutions listed in the programme guidelines.
  • The research visit will last for at least one month. It will be carried out and completed between 1 September 2012 and 31 August 2013.
  • Award holders will receive free on-campus housing during their visit.

Applicants must present a clear proposal for high-impact research with the host and demonstrate a history of collaboration with the host. Previous Global Scholarship Programme award holders may apply but priority will be given to first-time applicants. Those who have been awarded twice before are not eligible to apply.

Application procedure

Completed applications should be submitted to the Office of Academic Links (c/o Global Scholarship Programme) by the closing date via the following channels:

  • CUHK Faculty should submit their applications directly to the Office of Academic Links.
  • CUHK PhD Students should submit their applications via the Graduate School Office.
  • Visiting PhD Students should submit their applications via the CUHK Host Department.

Only one award will be made to each applicant. Applicants will be notified of the results in late-April 2012.

Deadline for application:

  • 19 March 2012 for CUHK PhD students
  • 30 March 2012 for CUHK faculty and visiting PhD students

PhD Student Exchange Programme 2012–13

The PhD Student Exchange Programme is designed to enhance research excellence at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) through building and strengthening the University's ties with leading research universities and institutes around the world and to increase the visibility of CUHK as a world-class research university through student mobility.

The programme provides basic funding support to CUHK PhD students to undertake short-term research visits in one of the following selected institutions, including the member institutions of the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN) to which CUHK belongs.

Non-WUN members

  • Brown University, US

WUN members

  • University of Bristol, UK
  • University of Leeds, UK

Eligibility

  1. Applicants must be registered full-time PhD students at CUHK at the time of application and during the research visit. Priority will be given to applicants who will be in their 3rd or 4th year of study when they undertake the visit.
  2. The research visit will last for a minimum of three months and a maximum of six months. It will be carried out and completed between 1 September 2012 and 31 August 2013, and prior to the submission of the final thesis.
  3. Applicants should preferably possess a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or above.
  4. Applicants must demonstrate a history of collaboration with the host supervisors (either through the applicants themselves or through their thesis supervisors) and show how sustainable cooperation and links will result from the visit.
  5. Applicants must present a clear proposal for high-impact research under the supervision of a host at one of the above institutions.
  6. For applications to WUN members, i.e., the University of Leeds and the University of Bristol, students should present a proposal for research that falls within one of the four WUN Global Challenges, i.e. Adapting to Climate Change; Global Higher Education and Research; Global Public Health and Non-Communicable Disease; and Understanding Cultures. To learn more about the WUN Global Challenges, please refer to www.wun.ac.uk/challenges. Strong applications with a focus in other areas may also be considered.
  7. Applications to exchange at Brown University's Alpert Medical School will not be accepted.
  8. The applications must be endorsed by the relevant heads of departments to confirm that on-going collaboration in that research area will be supported.

Applications not chosen for the PhD Student Exchange Programme will automatically be considered for the Global Scholarship Programme for Research Excellence-CNOOC Grants.

Terms of award

The value of the award will be based on the duration and destination of visit. Normally the amount will range from HK$15,000 to HK$50,000. The award is meant to cover part of the travel cost to and living expense at the host institution. Applicants are reminded to learn more about the costs required for the visit during the planning stage.

Number of awards

Up to six awards will be made in 2012–13 to support research exchange at the above institutions and each institution will receive two CUHK PhD students under the PhD Student Exchange Programme.

Application procedures

Completed applications should be submitted to the Office of Academic Links (c/o Ms. Audrey Chung - PhD Student Exchange Programme) by 30 March 2012.

Only one award will be made to each applicant. Applicants will be notified of the results by 30 April 2012 via letters posted to their respective departments/units.

The University of Cambridge Clare Hall Visiting Fellowship Programme 2013–2014

The University of Cambridge Clare Hall Visiting Fellowship Programme 2013–2014 is now open for nominations. The fellowship allows a Visiting Fellow to carry out research at Clare Hall, University of Cambridge. The visiting period could be six or 12 months, starting from the summer, October 2013, or January or March 2014. All full-time teaching appointees at the rank of assistant professor or above, in any discipline, who have worked at the University for not less than one year, are eligible for application.

A successful applicant will be granted a monthly allowance of HK$10,000 by CUHK to subsidise residence at Clare Hall. A post-fellowship service undertaking is required (18 months in case of a 6-month fellowship or 36 months in case of a 12-month fellowship).

Sophia Lecturing-Research Grants for 2013–14

Sophia University, Japan, is inviting applications to the Sophia Lecturing-Research Grants for 2013–14. The grant provides support to academic staff interested in conducting science and technology research at Sophia University for up to three months between 1 April 2013 and 31 March 2014.

Eligibility

  1. Applicants must hold the rank of full-time professor, associate or assistant professor, instructor, or (research) assistant at CUHK.
  2. Applicants must specialise in one of the following fields: Engineering, Mathematics, or Natural Sciences.

Terms of award

  1. Award holders will receive free housing at the guest house of Sophia University and a daily stipend of:
    • ¥5,000 per day for those invited as "Visiting Professor" , "Visiting Associate Professor", "Visiting Lecturer", or "Visiting Assistant Professor"; or
    • ¥4,000 per day for those invited as "Visiting Researcher" or "Visiting Assistant".
  2. Travel costs and other expenses will be the responsibility of the award holders.

Application procedure

  1. Applicants should establish contact with an academic staff member at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Sophia University, for the proposed research before applying. The Faculty of Science and Technology is composed of three departments: Materials and Life Sciences, Engineering and Applied Sciences, and Information and Communication Sciences.   2. Applicants should complete the application form and provide the following documents:
    • A detailed plan for the research at Sophia University;
    • A CV and a list of principal publications; and
    • A recommendation letter from the home department head.
  3. Completed applications should be submitted to Ms. Yvonne Heung, Office of Academic Links, by 17 May 2012 for consolidation. The applications will be forwarded to Sophia University for consideration. Applicants will be notified of the result in September 2012.
