Call for applications

The following programmes are currently open for applications by faculty members and PhD students of CUHK:

  • CUHK-Karolinska Institute PhD Student Exchange Programme 2013–14 (Deadline: 25 October 2013)
  • Utrecht University Visiting Fellowships and Intensive Workshops (Deadline: 1 December 2013, equivalent to 2 December 2013, 07:00, Hong Kong time)

CUHK-Karolinska Institute PhD Student Exchange Programme 2013–14 (Deadline: 25 October 2013)

The PhD Student Exchange Programme is designed to enhance research excellence at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) through building and strengthening the University's ties with leading research universities and institutes around the world and to increase the visibility of CUHK as a world-class research university through student mobility.

The current call for applications of the programme invites proposals to visit Karolinska Institutet (KI), Sweden.

Eligibility
  1. Applicants must be registered full-time PhD students at CUHK at the time of application and during the research visit. Priority will be given to applicants who will be in their 3rd or 4th year of study when they undertake the visit.
  2. The research visit shall last for a minimum of 1 month and a maximum of 6 months. It shall be carried out and completed between 1 March 2014 and 31 August 2014, and prior to the submission of final thesis.
  3. Applicants should possess a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or above.
  4. The programme welcomes applications from PhD students from Life Sciences, Medicine, and Psychology. To view the available disciplines at Karolinska Institutet, please visit: http://ki.se/?l=enApplicants must demonstrate a history of collaboration with the host supervisors (either through the applicants themselves or through their thesis supervisors) and how sustainable cooperation and links will result from the visit.
  5. The applications must be endorsed by the relevant heads of departments to confirm that on-going collaboration in that research area will be supported.

Other factors which may be taken into consideration include:

  1. Output from previous joint activities/exchange activities with the host institution/supervisor.
Terms of Award
  1. The value of the award will vary based on the duration of visit. Normally the amount will range from HK$15,000 to HK$50,000. The award is meant to cover part of the travel cost and living expense at the host institution. Applicants are reminded to learn more about the costs required for the visit during the planning stage.
  2. Award holders will be responsible for arranging the practicalities of the visit, including but not limited to traveling plans, visa application, accommodation, and health and medical insurance coverage as required.
  3. Award holders will normally be covered under the "CUHK's Group Travel Insurance (Students and Postgraduate Studentship Holder)". Award holders are advised to purchase additional travel insurance as deemed necessary*.
  4. Award holders may be eligible for an in-residence leave with full postgraduate studentship support to cover other expenses. For more information please contact the Graduate School Office.

Number of Awards

Up to two awards will be made in 2013–14 to support research attachments at Karolinska Institutet.

Only one award will be made to each applicant. Applicants will be notified of the results in November 2013 via letters posted to their respective departments/units.

Utrecht University Visiting Fellowships and Intensive Workshops (Deadline: 1 December 2013, equivalent to 2 December 2013, 07:00, Hong Kong time)

Visiting Fellowships

The Visiting Fellowships programme provides grants to support visits by CUHK faculty to UU or UU faculty to CUHK. The purpose of the visits is to initiate new collaborations in education between UU and its partners and to explore and set up cooperation projects in education and/or research in the fields of "Life Sciences", "Sustainability", "Institutions", or "Youth and Identity", which are the four multidisciplinary strategic themes of UU. Terms of Award

  • For each selected Visiting Fellow, the UU faculty / department / institute concerned will receive a maximum grant of €5,000 to arrange the practicalities for the Visiting Fellow. Any additional funding will be arranged by the applicants or his/her home institution.
  • The grant is meant to partly cover the costs for travel and stay of the Visiting Fellow.
  • The deliverables of the Visiting Fellow include:
    • Contribution to (post)graduate research and (under)graduate teaching by lecturing and/or giving master classes.
    • A public lecture.
    • A report, including an overview of deliverables and follow-up activities, should be submitted to UU within one month after the visit. Follow-up results of the Visiting Fellowship should also be reported after one year.

Intensive Workshops

The Intensive Workshops programme provides grants for the organization of intensive workshops between UU and its international partner(s) in at least one UU's strategic theme. An intensive workshop is an expert meeting of scientific leaders to strengthen existing or initiate new collaborations between UU and its international partners. The main purpose of the workshop should be exploring and setting up new (external funded) cooperation projects in research and/or education in one of the strategic themes of UU. Terms of Award

Each selected application will be awarded with a maximum grant of €7,500 as additional funding to organize the workshop.

The grant will be disbursed as an advance payment to the UU faculty / department / institute of the selected UU applicant. The UU faculty / department / institute is responsible for arranging all further financial practicalities for the workshop.
