Founded in 1963, CUHK bears the motto as "博文約禮" (through learning and temperance to virtue). It is recorded in the Analects of Confucius that the Master says, "The superior man, extensively studying all learning, and keeping himself under the restraint of the rules of propriety, may thus likewise not overstep what is right." (Legge's version of the Four Books). It denotes that the University is laying equal emphasis on the intellectual and moral aspects of education.
How does CUHK actualize the spirit in its motto? Other than General Education, College System, Bilingualism and Multiculturalism, are there any elements serving as bases to constitute the University tradition? Could these bases help differentiate CUHK from other local universities?
