The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) strengthens research ties with the University of Bristol, a member of the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN) by establishing bilateral staff and student mobility programmes.
CUHK strengthens research ties with University of Bristol
CUHK and the University of Bristol (Bristol) have been in talks for developing research collaborations under the auspices of the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN), to which both universities belong. Following the visit by Prof. Eric Thomas, Vice-Chancellor of Bristol, on 12 January 2012, the two universities have agreed to establish a PhD Student Exchange Programme and Short-term Faculty Exchange Programme. The first cohort starts in 2012–13. Under the bilateral arrangements, CUHK and Bristol will exchange PhD students and faculty members for short-term research visits on an annual basis. These visits will focus on the four WUN Global Challenges, namely Adapting to Climate Change; Global Higher Education and Research; Global Public Health and Non-Communicable Disease; and Understanding Cultures.
Research collaboration between CUHK and Bristol is already in place. CUHK's Department of Social Work recently received a HK$3.2 million grant from the University Grants Committee for a project on poverty, in partnership with the University of Bristol.

Global Scholarship Forum facilitates research experience sharing among PhD students
The Second Global Scholarship Forum organised by the Office of Academic Links on 13 February 2012 served as a platform for past PhD student award holders of the "Global Scholarship Programme for Research Excellence-CNOOC Grants" to share their overseas research experience with the CUHK community. Over 30 PhD students and faculty staff attended the Forum. Prof. Jack Cheng, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of the Global Scholarship Programmes Steering Committee, opened the forum, and Prof. Henry Wong, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research), and Prof. Sian Griffiths, Director of the Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care, were rapporteurs for the two breakout sessions in the humanities and social science, and engineering, medicine and science. The new batch of PhD student award holders under the Global Scholarship Programme for Research Excellence-CNOOC Grants in 2012–13 also took the opportunity to learn from their predecessors and exchange information about their upcoming research attachments.
