An Artistic Banker's Reminiscence of the Past:
Art Exhibition of Prof. Liu Mingkang at S.H. Ho College

S.H. Ho College held a painting exhibition entitled "Reminiscence of the Past" of Prof. Liu Mingkang, Honorary Fellow of S.H. Ho College and former Chairman of the China Banking Regulatory Commission, from 28 November to 12 December 2012. Through 29 paintings, Prof. Liu depicts his life in the mainland in the 1970s and his recent experience in different corners of the world. The selected works include A Journey to Jerusalem, At My Wits' End and Recollections on the Mekong River. Two of the works, namely, Embracing Tranquillity and Nature and Reflections, completed during his stay at S.H. Ho College, were presented to the College to commemorate its establishment.

Prof. Liu Mingkang was born in Shanghai in 1946. Since childhood, he has had an untiring passion for art and calligraphy. "In primary school, I was not a naughty kid nor was I a diligent student. I felt I was forced to finish my homework. The only exception was my artwork. I felt connected with my art teacher," he recollected. Successful in the financial sector, he never slacks off in his pursuit for art even though art is not a means to make a living for him. "Happiness does not last long, and that is why we need memories. Life to me has been a bumpy road, but I have a lot of tales to share with my friends. Looking back on my past, life has been like a stage – people come and go and I have crossed paths with different people in my life. I chronicle these little stories with my paintbrush and share them with you," said Prof. Liu.

Officiating at the opening ceremony held on 28 November were Prof. Liu; Mr Tung Chee Wah, Vice Chairman of the CPPCC; Mr. Tang Hui, President of Rongbaozhai Painting Academy; Prof Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor of CUHK; Dr Tzu-leung Ho, Chairman of the Committee of Overseers, S.H. Ho College; and Prof. Samuel Sun, Master of the College.

Prof. Liu delivered a speech entitled My Points on Arts at the High Table Dinner after the opening ceremony. "To translate experience into drawing in the hope that it will get across to other people, that's how we know life, feel life, and influence life. In today's ever-changing world, one must hold on to his childlike simplicity to discover the goodness and truth of life," he shared with the 600 students and staff members of S.H. Ho College.
