Bilateral Teaching Exchange Programme (Applications will be considered all year round)

The Bilateral Teaching Exchange Programme now accepts applications on a year-round basis. Individual faculty members at CUHK are encouraged to make use of this programme and actively seek teaching exchange opportunities. No exchange agreement is needed with the counterpart's home institution in order to engage in this programme. 

Under the programme, a faculty member at CUHK will invite his/her counterpart from an equivalent department/school at an overseas university to serve as his/her partner to teach at least one UGC-funded undergraduate or research postgraduate course and undertake research for one term at CUHK. In return, the CUHK faculty member will undertake at least one teaching course and conduct research at the host university for one term.

The faculty members on exchange will continue to receive their salary from the home university and will not receive any remuneration from the host university. Faculty members at CUHK can continue to enjoy their allowance/benefits while on exchange and they should enquire with the home department and faculty for funding to support the inbound visiting faculty member's stay at CUHK. Inbound visiting faculty members are expected to bear their own airfare and accommodation cost for the exchange. The incumbents could also seek financial support from their home university.

International Partnerships Development Programme 2014-15 (Application extended to 19 September 2014)

Applications for the International Partnerships Development Programme will close this Friday, 19 September 2014.

The programme aims to promote the development of partnerships by encouraging faculty members and their academic units concerned to initiate visits to the University's partners overseas for development of faculty/departmental/institute-level collaborations. With the support of the Programme, the awarded faculty members will undertake visits of up to seven days to participate in academic activities of exploratory and developmental nature at a number of top institutions around the world, including Brown University, University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, Utrecht University, University of Toronto and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

WUN Research Development Fund 2014 (5:00pm, Internal closing date: 19 September 2014)

Applications for the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN) Research Development Fund (RDF) for 2014 will close at 5:00pm this Friday, 19 September 2014.

WUN is an exclusive network of 16 research-led universities across nine countries (the University of Wisconsin-Madison will retire in August 2014 and hence is not included in this round of application); CUHK joined the Network in 2011 as its first member university in Hong Kong. The WUN RDF provides one year of seed funds to kick-start research projects under four key areas of research identified as the Global Challenges, including 'Responding to Climate Change', 'Global Higher Education and Research', 'Public Health (Non-Communicable Disease)', and 'Understanding Cultures'. For 2014, applications in the following focus areas and having relevance to Big Data will be given higher priority:

  • Responding to Climate Change: Migration/resilience; Climate/health co-benefits in cities; and Over- and under-nutrition, food security, and food systems.
  • Public Health (Non-Communicable Diseases): Health of family and migrants across the life course; Resilience of adolescents in different cultural contexts; and Schools as a setting for reducing risk factors associated with NCDs.
  • Global Higher Education and Research: Access and equity in higher education; and Economic and social outcomes of diversity and globalisation.
  • Understanding Cultures: Global migration and population; Generations in global context; and Chinese culture in the world (in connection with the WUN Global China Group).

International Association of Universities (IAU) Leadership Development for Higher Education Reform (LEADHER) Programme (Closing date: 11:59pm, 12 October 2014)

The International Association of Universities (IAU) Leadership Development for Higher Education Reform (LEADHER) Programme aims to allow faculty members to explore the development of sustainable collaborative partnerships with other IAU member institutions with funding support from IAU and seek professional and institutional development through the exchange of experience through reciprocal learning.

TERMS OF AWARDS

  • The programme offers six grants annually during 2012-2016 on a competitive basis. Each grant worths up to €10,000.
  • The current call for applications will consider proposals for projects to be conducted and completed by 15 June 2015. All related reporting including a financial report must be submitted to IAU by the same deadline.
  • LEADHER grants are not intended to cover the full costs associated with implementing projects. Participating institutions are expected to invest in the project by contributing support, financial and/or in-kind, to offset the overall costs.

ELIGIBILITY

a) Institutions interested in the programme are invited to submit project proposals which focus on one or two of the following areas:

  • Developing research mission, research policy and research development strategy
  • Research planning, organisation and management
  • Research training, in particular innovative doctoral programmes
  • Innovative approaches to research capacity building via cooperation
  • Policies and programmes for funding of research (public/private) and revenue generation, diversification of funding sources
  • Collection, maintenance and dissemination of research results (publications, patents, products, etc.)
  • Alternative modes for research production (including cooperation with the private sector)
  • Building linkages between the university research system and national/regional research systems (if applicable)
  • University contribution to the development of strong national research agendas
  • Research capacity building through internationalisation

b) Grants will be offered to projects that involve a partnership which brings together senior administrators and institutional leaders from two or more IAU member institutions based in different countries, with at least one located in a developing nation. The list of IAU member institutions can be found at www.iau-aiu.net/content/institutions.

c) Each project must be international in scope, involving at least one institution located in a country listed under low-income economies or lower-middle-income economies (http://data.worldbank.org/about/country-and-lending-groups#Low_income).

d) Each project is expected to involve single or reciprocal learning visits between individuals or teams of institutional administrators (Vice Presidents, Deans and Heads of Division/Services, etc.), from one partner institution to another. Rectors, presidents, vice-chancellors, etc. are normally not eligible.

e) Interested institutions, working in partnership, must submit a joint application. In the case of projects involving a third partner, please provide additional information on a supplementary sheet when necessary.

PhD Student Exchange Programme 2014-15 opens for application (Closing date: 20 October 2014)

The programme provides funding to support CUHK research postgraduate students to undertake short-term research attachments at the partner institutions. It enriches the students' learning experience and facilitates research collaborations. The awards will range from HK$15,000 to HK$50,000 and are meant to cover part of the travel cost and living expenses at the host institutions. Applications for the 2014-15 programme to University of Bristol, UK and Utrecht University, the Netherlands are now open. The application deadline is 20 October 2014. Short-term Faculty Exchange Programme 2014-15 opens for application (Closing date: 31 October 2014)

The programme is part of CUHK's ongoing drive to expand its network of international partnerships for joint research collaborations. The selected faculty members will participate in a series of academic activities relevant to their research interests during a one-week exchange at the partner institutions where they will meet with scholars and researchers to explore institutional-level academic collaboration. CUHK will provide international airfare to the awarded outgoing faculty members and free accommodation to the visiting faculty members. Applications for the 2014-15 programme to Brown University, US; University of Bristol and University of Leeds, UK; Utrecht University, the Netherlands; and the University of Sydney, Australia are now open. L'Oréal Research Scholarship (Closing date: 31 October 2014)

The L'Oréal Research Scholarship is now calling for applications for 2015. The scholarship aims to provide outstanding postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows who are permanent residents of Hong Kong or Macau with a unique opportunity of exposure to the research environment in France through participation in research work at Institut Pasteur, a world leader in basic biological and biomedical research as well as a renowned teaching centre. Postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows who demonstrate a keen and devoted capability and intention to pursue research studies in France can apply for the scholarship.

Awardees will perform research work in an academic discipline of their choice and in one of the laboratories of Institut Pasteur in France. The awardees will be supervised by senior researchers of Institut Pasteur at the recommendation of, or reference from the HKU-Pasteur Research Centre.

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants shall be:

  • Enrolled in a postgraduate programme or a postdoctoral fellow employed by one of the universities of Hong Kong or Macau.
  • A Hong Kong or Macau permanent resident.

TERMS OF AWARD

The scholarship covers a round trip air ticket between Hong Kong/Macau and Paris, France (HK$10,000), housing allowance (500€ per month) and living allowance (HK$220 per day) and the total award amount is up to HK$45,500 for an internship that takes place for up to three months from June to August in 2015.

Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton for 2015-16 (Closing date: 1 November 2014)

The Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), Princeton is an independent private institution founded in 1930 to create a community of scholars focused on intellectual inquiry, free from teaching and other university obligations. The Institute is divided into four Schools: Historical Studies, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Social Science. Each year, scholars from around the world apply to go to IAS to pursue their own research. Those who are chosen are offered a membership for a set period and a stipend. Members receive access to the extensive resources of the Institute, including offices, access to libraries, subsidised restaurant and housing facilities, and some secretarial services.

Utrecht University Visiting Fellowship and Intensive Workshops (Closing date: 7:00am, Hong Kong time, 2 December 2014)

Visiting Fellowship

The Visiting Fellowship Programme provides grants to support visits by CUHK faculty to UU or UU faculty to CUHK. The purpose of the visits is to initiate new collaborations (education and/or research) in the four multidisciplinary strategic themes of UU, namely "Life Sciences", "Sustainability", "Institutions", and "Youth and Identity".

TERMS OF AWARD

  • For each selected Visiting Fellow, the UU faculty / department / institute concerned will receive a maximum grant of €5,000 to arrange the practicalities for the Visiting Fellow. Any additional funding will be arranged by the applicants or his/her home institution.
  • The grant is meant to partly cover the costs for travel and stay of the Visiting Fellow.
  • The deliverables of the Visiting Fellow include: i) contribution to (post)graduate research and (under)graduate teaching by lecturing and/or giving master classes, and ii) public lecture.

Intensive Workshops

The Intensive Workshops Programme provides grants for the organisation of workshops between UU and its international partner(s) in at least one of UU's four strategic themes. An intensive workshop is an expert meeting of scientific leaders to strengthen existing or initiate new collaborations between UU and its international partners. The main purpose of the workshop is to explore and set up new research and/or education projects (externally funded).

TERMS OF AWARD

  • Each selected application will be awarded a maximum grant of €7,500 to organise the workshop.
  • The grant will be disbursed as an advance payment to the UU faculty / department / institute concerned to arrange the financial practicalities for the workshop. In case the workshop is organised at a partner institution, the UU faculty / department / institute concerned will arrange the financial practicalities together with the hosting partner.
