The Global Youth Chinese Literary Award for the New Century 2013

Promising Responses to the Award
To showcase the talents of young writers in Chinese literary writings and encourage the sharing of their experience in creative writing, the Faculty of Arts of the CUHK inaugurated the Global Youth Chinese Literary Award for the New Century in 2000. For the Fifth Global Youth Chinese Literary Award of 2013, 1,000 plus entries from over 220 higher education institutions from all over the world have been received.  The entrants from Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Malaysia, Holland, the USA and the UK have demonstrated the resonating success of the Award since its inception. On 14 December, 2013, Professor Benjamin Wah, Provost of the CUHK, Professor Leung Yuen Sang, Dean of Arts, Professor Serena Jin, Emeritus Professor of Translation, Professor Chen Pingyuan, Professor of Chinese Language and Literature, Professor Hoyan Hang Fung, Chairperson of the Organizing Committee of the Award were invited to officiate at the Award Presentation Ceremony at the Hong Kong Central Library.

Enlightening remarks by the officiating guests
Professor Benjamin Wah remarked: "Literary creative works are being interwoven into different ages and lives. Your experience and achievements today will be your sparkle of aspiration which lights up your days of possible vicissitudes in the future."

Professor Leung Yuen Sang, Dean of Arts remarked: "Literature provides a momentary sanctuary of mind in the hustle and bustle of modern times. Quality literary works exhibit thought-provoking perspectives which inspire readers' reflection on reality. CUHK, as a university with an international vision, we are obliged to achieve the aims of encouraging Chinese literary writing, promoting Chinese culture, and enhancing cultural exchanges between the East and the West."

Professor Hoyan Hang Fung, Chairperson of the Organizing Committee of the Award said: "From the entries received, I read thoughts of living, emotional struggles, modern romances, and childhood memories in hometown of the young writers. Given the passion and dreams expressed by the entrants, I am interested in knowing their process of initiation into their ways of creative writings. With their individual mindsets and techniques, these young souls have been following the footsteps of established literary authors in the traditions of literature by means of reading, imitation, dialogues and experiments.  This is what literary inheritance means."

Diversity of the Disciplines of Entrants
The Award targets for the full-time undergraduate students in the region and internationally. The entrants of the Award are not restricted to students of language studies such as Chinese, English, French and Japanese and the humanities such as literature, translation, philosophy, history, arts and drama. It is very encouraging to have attracted students of disciplines outside the arts and humanities such as law, international politics, business administration, architecture, media and communications, network engineering, electronic information engineering, etc. For the list of awardees, please click here: (http://www.literary.arts.cuhk.edu.hk/result.php).
