The International Conference on Interdisciplinary HIV/STD Research in China was held from March 25 to March 27, 2011 at Guangzhou in China.
The theme of the conference was "Integrating social sciences with public health in HIV work in China". It was jointly organized by the Centre for Health Behaviours Research of the School of Public Health and Primary Care of the CUHK, and the Centre of Medical Anthropology and Behavioral Health of the School of Sociology and Anthropology of the Sun Yat Sen University and the China National Centre for STD Control.
The conference was well attended by about 110 local and international prominent participants, including top international HIV researchers coming from Johns Hopkins University, Harvard University, Columbia University, Emory University, University College London, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Georgetown University, Wayne University, RMIT, Tsing Hua University, Fudan University, The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, leaders of international organizations such as World Health Organization, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Médecins Sans Frontières, and directors of HIV programs of provincial CDC in China such as Hunan, Guangdong and Yunnan, directors the National STD Control Centre and National Research Institute for Family Planning as well as other non-governmental organizations.
The fruitfulness of the event reflects the strategic position of the CUHK in linking public health researchers in China with their international counterparts and the international nature of the HIV prevention work performed by members of our University.
The Centre for Health Behaviours Research of the School of Public Health and Primary Care has become a full member of the WHO Collaborative Network on HIV and Health since 2010. The School of Public Health and Primary Care will continue to contribute to the development of international interdisciplinary collaborations, which is of strategic significance to our University.
