For more than three decades, the École française d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO) and the Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS) have maintained a close partnership, fostering joint research initiatives and academic dialogue between France and Hong Kong. To further strengthen this longstanding collaboration, a new Memorandum of Agreement was signed on 3 December 2025, marking the beginning of a new chapter in scholarly exchange between the two institutions. The ceremony was graced by the presence of Prof. Max Xiaobing Tang, Director of ICS and Prof. Valérie Gillet, Vice Director of Research of École française d'Extrême. It was also our pleasure to have Mrs. Christile Drulhe, Consul General of France in Hong Kong and Macau, witness the ceremony.

The International Conference on “ The Territorial Management and Its Mapping Process in East Asia”, co-organized by ICS, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), EFEO, and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) Library with the support of the Consul General of France in Hong Kong, was successfully held on 3 to 5 December 2025 at CUHK and HKUST. The three-day event brought together 29 distinguished scholars from around the world, including France, the United States, and Japan, who presented their research and expertise.
The conference explored the role of cartography in deepening our understanding of territorial governance in East Asian state practices between 1500 and 1900. The programme was structured into ten panels addressing themes such as territorial management, fiscal networks, cross-cultural diffusion of maps, and the preservation and restoration of cartographic collections. Library Tours have been arranged between panels with introduction to special map collections in CUHK Library and HKUST Library. The rich discussions and dynamic exchanges between speakers and audiences, both in-person and online, contributed to the success of the conference. |
