| A fire fighter fights for his dream and future | |

"I didn't realise the importance of academic qualification when I was young. After working for five years, I decided to go back to school to acquire higher qualifications for my career advancement. I love drawing and photography, so I chose the Higher Diploma Programme in Commercial Design to open my eyes to the field of design," Jeff shared. Everyone is curious about how a full time fire fighter attends a full time programme. "The 24-hour shift ( 48-hour rest after 24-hour work ) helps a lot! I made a request to the Fire Services Department to accumulate my annual leave and compensatory leave for public holidays to make time for classes," said Jeff. He showed appreciation to his colleagues for giving him the priority when applying for leave. But it wasn't an easy journey. When colleagues are taking rest, he goes to school or does his research and homework; when classmates are having leisure activities, he puts on his uniform to work. In "Design Join" – the Higher Diploma Programmes Graduation Exhibition 2014 held at the end of May – Jeff took home the 2nd Runner-up of the Best Display Award in the Commercial Design category. His project, named "The Northern District", shows the beauty of the northern part of the city where he grew up. He hopes that his design can eliminate the negative image of the district – a place full of mainlanders and grey goods traders. He plans to further his study and has applied for the Bachelor of Design (Visual Communication Design) Programme offered by the School and Griffith University, Australia. "This summer will be a busy one as I have taken an English course to prepare myself for the Bachelor's degree programme which is taught in English," Jeff said.
