Global Scholarship Programme for Research Excellence—CNOOC Grants 2011–12
The Global Scholarship Programme for Research Excellence—CNOOC Grants is designed to enhance research excellence at CUHK by building and strengthening the University's ties with leading research universities and institutes around the world and increasing the visibility of CUHK as a world-class research university through student and staff mobility.
Eligibility and terms
The programme helps junior faculty and PhD students at CUHK undertake short-term research visits at a selected group of leading research institutions listed in the programme guidelines. In addition, it helps PhD students from those institutions undertake short-term research attachments at CUHK. The programme details of each category are summarised as follow:
CUHK faculty
- Applicants must hold a full-time appointment at CUHK and should normally be at Assistant or Associate Professor rank substantiated within the last three years or on a type of contract that may lead to substantive appointment in the course of employment [Type K1 (SX)] at CUHK.
- The research visit will last for a minimum of four weeks and should be completed before 31 August 2012.
- Each award is valued at HK$20,000 for a four-week activity or HK$30,000 for a six-week (or longer) activity.
CUHK PhD students
- Applicants must be registered as full-time PhD students at CUHK at the time of application and during the period of the research visit. Priority will be given to applicants in their 3rd or 4th year of study when they undertake the visit.
- The research visit will last for a minimum of three months and a maximum of six months. It should be completed before 31 August 2012 and prior to the submission of the final thesis.
- The value of the award will vary based on the duration and destination of the visit, normally ranging from HK$15,000 to HK$50,000.
Visiting PhD students
- Applicants must be registered full-time PhD students at one of the institutions listed in Appendix 1.
- The research visit will last for at least one month and be completed before 31 August 2012.
- Award holders will receive free on-campus housing during their visits.
Applicants must present a clear proposal for high impact research with the host and demonstrate a history of collaboration with the host, too. Priority will normally be given to research that falls within the five areas of excellence for strategic research investment at CUHK, i.e. Biomedical Sciences, Chinese Studies, Economics and Finance, Geoinformation and Earth Sciences, and Information Sciences. Previous Global Scholarship Programme award holders may apply but priority will be given to first-time applicants. Those who have been successful on two occasions are not eligible.
Only one award will be made to each applicant. Applicants will be notified of the results before the end of December 2011.

CUHK-Waseda University Short-term Faculty Exchange Programme 2011–12
Programme objectives
The CUHK-Waseda University Short-term Faculty Exchange Programme is part of CUHK's ongoing drive to expand its network with international partners for joint research collaborations. Through a one-week exchange at Waseda University in Japan (Waseda), selected faculty will participate in a series of academic activities relevant to their research interest and focus, and meet with scholars and researchers to explore academic collaboration in their field of expertise.
The programme's objectives are to:
- foster stronger ties between faculty members at CUHK and Waseda for academic and research exchange
- develop institutional-level partnerships between CUHK and Waseda
- explore research collaborations that will serve Hong Kong, Japan and the world
Applicants should submit a plan for the one-week exchange. The proposed exchange activities should be planned according to the focus of the applicants' research as well as the aspiration of the applicant's home department/unit.
The proposed visit to Waseda University should be conducted between April and August 2012 or between late September 2012 and February 2013.
Eligibility
Academic staff members from all disciplines are welcome to apply. Applications should be endorsed by the relevant department head or director of research institute.
Cost
CUHK will be responsible for international airfare while Waseda will provide accommodation free of charge.
Application
- At the time of application, applicants should have contacted a Waseda department and identified a discipline or a research area of mutual interest for further exploration during the visit.
- Applicants should prepare a plan for the one-week exchange and send the completed application form together with a biography to the head of his/her department or director of research institute for endorsement.
- The concerned department/research institute will submit the endorsed application to the Office of Academic Links for processing.
Applications will be reviewed and final results will be announced before the end of December 2011. Letters of offer will be made by Waseda to the successful applicants at least three months prior to the start of exchange.

McDonnell International Scholars Academy at Washington University in St. Louis, US
CUHK students are now invited to apply for the McDonnell International Scholars Academy at Washington University in St. Louis (WUSTL) for the 2012–13 academic year. Applications will be accepted online from 1 October 2011 to 1 February 2012.
Terms of award
Full tuition for a graduate or professional degree programme at WUSTL (please refer to mcdonnell.wustl.edu/admission/education for a list of the programs). This support will continue as long as the scholar is making satisfactory progress toward a degree.
- A 12-month stipend for each year that the scholar is making satisfactory progress toward a degree set at US$26,000 for the year beginning 16 August 2012.
- A one-time allowance of up to US$1,500 for travel to St. Louis for a period of study as an academy scholar.
- An annual travel allowance of up to US$2,000 for a trip to the scholar's alma mater, i.e. CUHK.
Eligibility
Applicants must be graduates of CUHK (either undergraduate or postgraduate) and must be admitted to one of a select group of full-time graduate or professional programmes at WUSTL.

Application and selection
Applicants are required to submit their applications online at mcdonnell.wustl.edu/admission/application/index.html together with a 1,000 word essay. Applicants should forward a copy of their application to the Office of Academic Links (c/o Ms. Yvonne Heung) by 25 January 2012 for the necessary follow-up.
The McDonnell Academy Steering Committee selects scholars based on outstanding academic potential and on the applicants' commitment to learning about international issues and global leadership. Successful applicants will be notified by email no later than mid-April 2012.
IMPORTANT: Applicants are reminded to submit an application only if they are committed to studying at WUSTL. Successful applicant(s) are not encouraged to withdraw once an offer is made.
