Inspiring Workshops

A diverse series of workshops were held for College students in the year 2024–25.

I. Workshop in CV Writing
The Workshop on CV Writing is designed to assist college students in crafting professional CVs and personal statements, addressing the importance of using keywords, transferable skills, and personal characteristics, common mistakes in a CV, and tips on networking for job searches.

Ms Tessa STEWART, as a professional CV writing trainer, not only offered group discussion sessions, but also one-on-one coaching sessions online. Participants were encouraged to share their CVs as demos, showcasing advantages and common mistakes to be aware of, aiming at learning from each other. A total of 36 participants attended the online workshop on 4 February 2025.

II. Social English and Intercultural Communication Workshop
In the evening of 19 February 2025, students from different majors came together for chill out in English. The goal of the workshop was to deepen participants' understanding of English for daily conversation and intercultural communication while encouraging them to practise their spoken English.

Thanks to Mr Michael Lane TESSMER, Assistant Lecturer, Independent Learning Centre, CUHK and College affiliate, offered guidance on improving the students’ language skills for social and cross-cultural interactions.

III. Toastmasters Club Taster Sessions
The College organised the Toastmasters Club Taster Sessions to provide students with a platform for enhancing their public speaking skills and building confidence in a supportive and friendly atmosphere. Participants were encouraged to practise through small group discussions and brief impromptu speeches on various topics.

After delivering their speeches, they received feedback on aspects like voice, gestures, and content from the general evaluator, Ms Tessa STEWART, who is Honorary Advisor of United College Toastmasters Club, and from the student coordinators, Miss Anson TANG (Year 4, Translation) and Mr Andy YUEN (Year 1, Translation).

IV. Getting ready for the workplace
Early preparedness is crucial in the workplace. Four speaker shared valuable insights and tips with the students in two sessions of the workshop in Term 2, 2024-2025 respectively.

Professor Kenneth Young encouraged students to cultivate positive habits and attitudes, such as punctuality, professionalism, and empathy, to bridge the divide between their current abilities and career aspirations, ultimately enhancing their readiness for the professional world.

Ms Ivy Kwok, Senior Manager of the Career Planning and Development Centre at the Office of Student Affairs (OSA), shared essential tips for establishing a successful career and encouraged students of all years to participate in the CUHK Careers Fairs to gain practical job-hunting experience.

Mr Wilfred KP Wong, BBS, JP, shared insights on the keys to success in the workplace. He emphasised the importance of understanding expectations, preparations, continuous learning, and the need for assertiveness and persistence. He also emphasised that managing emotions is crucial for maintaining team dynamics. In addition, another one of our alumni, Mr Erwin Chan, highlighted that a positive image including effective communication, appearance, interpersonal skills, and personal values does directly influence the perceptions of employers.
