Mini Impact Symposium – From Research to Entrepreneurship

Creating societal and economic impact from research beyond academia has become more valued in recent years. The Faculty was glad to present its first Mini Impact Symposium with the theme of “From Research to Entrepreneurship” via ZOOM on 18 September, 2020.

Professor Ngai To, Assistant Dean (Research) and Impact Coordinator of the Faculty kicked off the Symposium by introducing two successful entrepreneurs, Mr. George Chen, the CEO of Ecoinno H.K. Limited and Professor Wang Jianfang, the Director of NanoSeedz Limited and Advanced Plasmon Technologies Limited.

Mr. Chen believes that technology can bring human better life and change the world. He started the business of developing biodegradable natural fibre-based materials and their applications into various fields including food packaging, medical disposables, and automotive and construction a decade ago. He shared that his entrepreneurship begins with creativity and innovation, and there is no end as it keeps on developing by finding new problems to solve. Another successful entrepreneur, Professor Wang runs two companies with metal nanocrystals despite he has been occupied by lot of teaching and research work as Professor in Department of Physics and Assistant Dean (Education) of the Faculty. Having developed robust methods for the synthesis of high-purity colloidal plasmonic metal nanocrystals, his research group was granted seven Chinese patents and the patented technology has promoted his companies into high quality nanomaterial supplier which has attracted thousand customers ranging from economy, R&D in medicine, diagnostic, biotechnologies, optical and optoelectronic devices in different regions to approach. He was glad that the products increase the credibility of his research results and can support research with small lab items.

Apart from sharing the process of trial and error that they have experienced, both of them said that the most challenging part in setting up the business is to gather lots of scientists and engineers and make them interested in the fields. They hope that their companies can be places where young scientists can develop their career.
