"Youth and Identity" is one of the strategic research themes of UU that aims to explain and understand child and adolescent development by investigating the biological and socio-cultural factors which influence the development of young people. The theme is interdisciplinary in nature and involves researchers from the humanities, law, medicine, science, and social science.

During the visit, Prof. Cheung and Prof. Fung met with a number of senior representatives from different faculties and research units, including Prof. Wiljan van den Akker, Vice-rector for Research and Dean of Humanities; Prof. Werner Raub, Dean of Social and Behavioural Sciences; Prof. Wilma Vollebergh, Professor of Interdisciplinary Social Science; and Prof. Henriette de Swart, Director of the Institute of Linguistics.

CUHK and UU have identified each other as key partner for international collaborations. Since 2003, the two universities have developed multi-level collaborations, including undergraduate student exchange, PhD student exchange, and short-term faculty exchange. There are also active engagements in the areas of humanities, law, orthopaedics, and sustainability. More recently, the Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages at CUHK and the Institute of Linguistics at UU are making plans to establish a joint research centre for language, mind and brain.
