The CUHK SPHPC Student Government is going to increase the number of student activities and gatherings during the 2009-10 academic year. As the school nears 600 part-time and full-time students this year, students will have opportunities to involve themselves in student life—through advocacy, service and career development both in and out of the classroom.
In October, the Student Government will kick-off the first CUHK Public Health Lunchtime Leadership Lecture Series, a Tuesday lunch event that invites prominent leaders in public service to speak to students about emerging global issues relating to the health of populations. Ms Christine LOH, Chief Executive Officer of Civic Exchange, a prominent Hong Kong public policy think tank, and Ms Joanne OOI, Chief Executive Officer of Clean Air Network (CAN), will speak to the students at the first Leadership Lecture on Tuesday, 6 October 2009. Also participating in the series is Mr Andrew Seaton, British Consul-General to Hong Kong and Macao, who will speak in November on climate change.
Other plans on the Student Government calendar in September include filling spots on the Executive Committee as well as linking students from different student divisions through a Student Ambassador Programme. Melvin HUI and Kenneth LEE are Student Ambassadors from the new Bachelor of Science in Public Health Programme. Kenneth SONG and Leon LIN are Student Ambassadors for the Research Postgraduate Programmes. The Student Government is now inviting the students from Taught Postgraduate Programmes to be a Student Ambassador. Once the Executive Committee has been established, the Student Government will boost service and advocacy opportunities both on and off campus. They also hope to oragnise school-wide events such as showcasing public health films and art, social events for the students, and networking opportunities. Any questions or comments on this article?
