Pioneer in the use of renewable energy, CUHK was the first university in Hong Kong to set up a solar hot water system for shower facilities. The first set was installed at the Cheung Chuk Shan Amenities Building of United College back in 2004 and the other at the University Sports Centre the year after, supplying hot water for 160 and 250 showers per day respectively. Thanks to its vacuum outer layer which insulates against heat loss and maintains the water temperature during cloudy or sunless times of the day, the "solar-powered water heaters" work even during the night. Proven to be energy efficient, more of the heaters are being installed at the 27 student hostels on campus and the swimming pool. CUHK takes a variety of active measures to protect the environment.
