News on student exchange

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) warmly welcomes over 500 international and non-local students joining the CUHK community in the first term of the 2012-13 academic year! To promote student exchange, a series of activities are being organized from September to early November to disseminate information on exchange opportunities in 29 countries for the 2013-14 academic year.

i-Centre at the Yasumoto International Academic Park opens

The i-Centre was opened on 17 October 2012. Located at the Yasumoto International Academic Park (YIA), the i-Centre is the home to all incoming exchange students and the information centre for all CUHK students waiting to go on exchange. The building is named after Dr. Alex K. Yasumoto, a generous donor and supporter of international exchange of the University. The opening hours of the i-Centre are 8:45am to 5:30pm from Monday to Friday. A house-warming was held on 17 October at the i-Centre, when Prof. Jack Cheng, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Prof. Gordon Cheung, Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor learned about the campus life of incoming exchange students and their buddies.

A warm welcome to new incoming exchange students

Over 500 incoming exchange students participated in the orientation organized by OAL during 3 to 8 September 2012. The new students were welcomed by Prof. Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor and President, at YIA on 7 September.

CUHK student exchange programmes for 2013-14 open for application

At CUHK, students have opportunities to go on exchange in 29 destinations around the world. Over 240 programmes are offered by the colleges, faculties, departments and OAL. From 25 October to 5 November, university-wide exchange programmes and most faculty and academic department programmes for summer 2013 and regular term exchanges in 2013-14 administered by OAL are open for applications via CUSIS. Full-time students with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7, good disciplinary standing and satisfactory TOEFL or IELTS score (if required by the individual exchange programme) are eligible to apply for the exchange programmes.

A series of promotional activities has been held, including road shows and information sessions on the exchange programmes available in different countries, the application procedures and schedule. Information on the exchange programmes and application procedures are available at the OAL website.

Three CUHK incoming students from the UK win Scholarships for Excellence 2012

CUHK is delighted to host three recipients of the Scholarships for Excellence 2012 for one year or one semester in 2012-13.

Administered by the British Council and funded by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills of the United Kingdom Government, the Scholarships for Excellence scheme aims to encourage UK students to study in Hong Kong. The scholars on exchange at CUHK are:

  • Mr. Raiyan Abdullah Azmi, linguistics student from University College London
  • Mr. Joseph Richard Ogle, law student from University of Sheffield
  • Ms. Jessica Ellen Yeandle, international business student from University of Sheffield
Endeavour Australia Cheung Kong Awards reception

Heartiest congratulations to eight CUHK students for being awarded the Endeavour Australia Cheung Kong Awards in 2012! With the support of the Australian Government and Cheung Kong Group, the Endeavour Australia Cheung Kong Awards was launched in 2004. The Awards is a scholarship programme which aims to support educational exchange between undergraduate and postgraduate students in Australia and Asia. Scholarships are offered to Australian students going to Asia and Asian students (from Hong Kong and mainland China) going to Australia. In 2012, 49 students (20 Hong Kong students going to Australia and 29 Australian students coming to Hong Kong) were awarded the scholarship.

A reception was hosted by the Cheung Kong Group to celebrate the achievements of the Award on 22 September. Prof. Benjamin W. Wah, Provost, Ms. Shally Fan, Director of Academic Links and Ms. Myra Lau, Programme Manager of OAL attended the event to share the joy of the eight winning CUHK students and exchange students to CUHK.
