CUHK welcomes the first STINT Fellow from Örebro University, Sweden

CUHK and the Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Higher Education (STINT) have established cooperation in the STINT's Excellence in Teaching Programme since last year. Under the scheme, selected Swedish university faculty (STINT Fellows), will undertake a one-semester teaching at CUHK with funding support from the Foundation.

The first STINT Fellow, Dr. Louise Berglund, associate professor of History at Örebro University, visited CUHK in the first semester. During her visit, Dr. Berglund taught a course entitled "Ancient and Medieval Western History" which is developed by Professor Frederick Cheung. Dr. Berglund enjoyed teaching the students and working with committed and enthusiastic teachers in the department. In addition, she presented a paper for her research on gender and power primarily among the elite in medieval.

Dr. Berglund was eager to come to CUHK because it is a rapidly developing, ambitious university and she is interested in experiencing teaching history in a region that is not European and where the framework for understanding history could be very different from that of Sweden. She suggested future STINT Fellows to arrange a seminar to present their research and ideas fairly early in order to get off to a running start.

"There are so many interesting scholars here to exchange ideas with. I would also advise the Fellows to take the opportunity to explore this region both near and far, to place their experiences of CUHK in context. I hope to be able to continue to collaborate with CUHK in the areas of gender and history, and that we might also develop future discussions on the topic of historical anthropology, a vibrant area of research that is fruitful for contemporary and medieval historians alike. The Department of History and I have certainly talked about future collaboration and we see some possibilities, and we shall strive to develop these ideas.", said Dr. Berglund.

Global Scholarship Programme for Research Excellence for 2013–14 – applications open on 16 January 2013

The Global Scholarship Programme for Research Excellence was launched in 2007 with a generous funding provided by the China National Offshore Oil Corporation. The programme is designed to enhance research excellence at CUHK by building ties with leading research universities and institutions around the world and increasing the visibility of CUHK as a world-class research university through student and staff mobility. The programme funds junior faculty and PhD students at CUHK on short-term research attachments at a selected group of leading research institutions. In addition, it supports PhD students from those institutions to undertake research at CUHK.

Since 2007, a total of 156 awards with a value of HK$5 million have been made to 25 CUHK junior faculty, 103 CUHK PhD students and 28 visiting PhD students. With the support of the Global Scholarship Programme, CUHK faculty and students have undertaken research attachments at some of the most prestigious institutions around the world, including Harvard University, Yale University and the University of Oxford. Many of these visits have led to sustainable collaboration between the researchers.

The next round of application of the Global Scholarship Programme for Research Excellence will open on 16 January 2013. Short-term Faculty Exchange Programmes and PhD Student Exchange Programmes for 2013–2014 – applications open on 30 January 2013

The Short-term Faculty Exchange Programme is part of CUHK's ongoing drive to expand its network of international partners for joint research collaborations. The selected faculty members will participate in a series of academic activities relevant to their research interests on a one-week exchange at the partner institutions where they meet with scholars and researchers to explore institutional-level academic collaboration. CUHK has set up the Short-term Faculty Exchange Programme with the following overseas partner institutions: Brown University, US; University of Bristol, UK; University of Leeds, UK; Utrecht University, the Netherlands; and Waseda University, Japan. CUHK will provide international airfare to selected outgoing faculty members and free accommodation to the visiting faculty members.

The PhD Student Exchange Programme provides funding to support research postgraduate students to undertake short-term research attachments at the partner institutions. The Programme allows the students to enrich their learning experience and facilitate research collaborations. At present, such programmes are in place with the following institutions: Brown University, US; University of Bristol, UK; University of Leeds, UK; and Utrecht University, the Netherlands. Selected CUHK students will be awarded with a grant to cover part of the travelling cost and living expenses at the host university.

The next round of application for the Short-term Faculty Exchange Programmes and PhD Student Exchange Programmes will open on 30 January 2013.
