Significant Collections Acquisition

This compilation of excerpts in Latin from the Epistles and the Gospels, each surrounded by a commentary (homily), served as a helpful guide for teachers and priests, with the latter often using it as a foundation for their sermons. The commentaries make the book especially valuable for understanding how the greater public understood these parts of the scriptures.

The final volume explicates the research and literature on the basis of which the compilation was made.

New Electronic Resources

South China Sea Island Disputes: 1877–1988

This database is an assembly of selected texts, maps, and official documents from various national archives that present a primary record of multiple international territorial disputes involving the South China Sea and its various islands in 1877–1988. The ownership of the three island groups at issue – the Spratly Islands in the central sea, the Paracel Islands in the northwest, and Scarborough Reef to the northeast – has formed the basis of one of the longest and most complex territorial quarrels in the world, with numerous neighbouring countries and European colonial powers laying claim to the region. Although the majority of these islands are not true islands, and in some cases comprise little more than submerged reefs and shoals, they have played host to real violence and bloodshed in the pursuit of maritime hegemony.
