Freedom Leung: Stress Management in the Decade of the Mind
Prof. Freedom LEUNG, Senior College Tutor, was the guest speaker of the college assembly on 15 February 2019 (Friday). Prof. Leung spoke on "Stress Management in the Decade of the Mind". He first explained that people might have positive, neutral or negative reactions when amygdala was arisen, which would then cause cognitive responses. Something has to be done when one has been under toxic stress. To regulate amygdala's reaction, a 3-Well Approach could be adopted: eat well, sleep well and exercise well. Eat well meant to maintain a balance diet and eat more food rich in tryptophan, and avoid taking caffeine. Sleep well referred to having enough sleep as sleep performed repairing function, reorganised what one learnt during the day and have it stored in long-term memory. Exercise well helped reduce adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). If one did not exercise, crying also helped. Lastly, the cognitive part had to be dealt with, which was the mind. Through practicing mindfulness meditation, it could calm the mind. It was also advised to do breathing exercise every day. According to long time researches of reputable psychologist, there were two major sources of chronic stress. They were human relationship and whether or not one could have good match with career and personal attributes. There was no drug that could replace love. People needed positive emotional bonding. Furthermore, it was also important for people to do what they were interested and matched their personal attributes. Prof. Leung concluded with his advice on establishing a healthy lifestyle and mind set.
