From the Editor

We are pleased to bring to you Issue 10 of the College Newsletter, which summarizes the events and achievements from the second half of 2014. The third cohort of students joined us in September 2014, and with a larger student body, more activities have been organized, both by the College and by student bodies. We owe much to many parties who have supported our endeavours, and we are pleased to tell the story of this vibrant community to all our friends.

General Education Best Essay Award 2013–14
College students Miss Ma Ming Yan (Year 3, English), Mr Wu Pak Yiu Byron (Year 3, Philosophy) and Miss Zhang Xian (Year 2, Economics) were selected as award winners of the General Education Best Essay Award 2013–14.

Walking Campaign 2015
CW Chu College was chosen as the end-point of this year's university annual walking campaign, which was held on 13 February 2015. Organized by the University Health Service and several other units, the campaign aims to introduce a new walking trail, promote the health benefits of exercise and cultivate a walking culture on campus.

Incoming Exchange Students

The College welcomed a new batch of incoming exchange students in Term 2, 2014–15.  A total of 14 students, coming from various universities in Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Italy, Mexico, Singapore, and USA, will join the College for one semester, and participate in communal dinners and High Table Dinners with other College teachers and students.  These new comers received a warm welcome at the Welcome Lunch organized by the College on 5 January 2015, during which they had a cordial exchange with the College Master, Dean of Students, members of the External Links and Exchange Committee, other College teachers and students. In addition, there are 12 exchange students who have been here since the first semester.

The Representative Council

 

The Representative Council is the highest body for the daily supervision of the Student Union, and acts as the representative for members of the Student Union; it is responsible for supervising the Executive Council and Affiliated Societies, as well as other affairs as prescribed by the Constitution of the Student Union. The term of office of the second Representative Council of CW Chu College Student Union is from 1 February 2015 to 31 January 2016.

The First Residents' Association

Master's Championship

The first Residents' Association of the CW Chu College Hostel, C·Lover, launched the Master's Championship in January 2015 aiming at increasing students' sense of belonging and connectedness to the College and striving to deepen the friendship among residents. The Championship is a yearly competition for residents of the three Wings, and  includes LOL games, a cooking competition, a singing contest, a campus orientation, as well as football and basketball matches. The Wing accumulating the highest points from all events will be awarded the overall championship.

High Table Dinners

The Second High Table Dinner 2014–15

As part of the celebration of the College Founders' Day, this High Table Dinner was attended by members of the Committee of Overseers and other College guests, in addition to more than 200 students. Professor Frederick Ma, Former Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, shared with participants the three stages of his life; he lived with no regrets, and would do it all over again.

Communal Dinner Talks

College life was much enriched by the talks at communal dinners. The following captures moments in the talks in Term 1 of the academic year 2014–15.

College Activities
Seal Engraving Workshop

Chinese Seal Engraving is a Chinese traditional art that combines calligraphy and carving. Nowadays, seal engraving has been classified as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. CW Chu College invited Ms Kady Fung, founder of Sealing Stone DIY Studio, to host a seal engraving workshop for College students on 19 November 2014.

CUHK Alumni Homecoming 2014

The CUHK Alumni Homecoming 2014 was held on 29 November 2014, drawing around 5,000 alumni, family members and friends to the campus. They witnessed the latest development of the University and reunited with their classmates on this special occasion. Members of the College Student Union hosted a carnival booth on the University Mall. With a specially-designed maze game, they introduced the College location and features to the visitors. They also made cotton candies and balloon animals as gifts for visitors on the spot. As the College booth had succeeded in attracting quite a number of visitors, it was selected by the organizer and alumni representatives as one of the most attractive booths in this event.

Sports

The 11th CUHK Rowing Championships

The 11th CUHK Rowing Championships took place along Shing Mun River in Shatin on 10 and 11 January 2015. College students Chan Chun Yu, Fu Chin Wai, Lau Kam Wai and Shum Andrew Wang Tai formed the Men's Rowing Team to participate in the coxed four 1000-metres event. They finished fifth in the finals.

Visitors
Visit from Prof Yang Chen Ning and Prof Yang Fujia
Renowned Physicists Professor Yang Chen Ning and Professor Yang Fujia visited the College and were warmly welcomed by Professor Kenneth Young, College Master, and Ms Melody Lee, College Secretary, on 9 January 2015. Professor Young and College Teachers Professor Vernon Hsu and Professor Zhou Xunyu joined  the two distinguished guests for dinner that night, and four students were also present. The students benefited greatly from the sharing with the two guests.
