MAJOR PAST EVENTS Inauguration Ceremony of The Chinese University of Hong Kong – Shandong University (CUHK-SDU) Joint Laboratory on Reproductive Genetics cum the 1st International Symposium on Reproductive Genetics |

Following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Hospital for Reproductive Medicine, Shandong University (SDU) in June 2013, "The Chinese University of Hong Kong – Shandong University (CUHK-SDU) Joint Laboratory on Reproductive Genetics" (the Joint Laboratory) was officially established at CUHK on 20 December 2013. Prof. Chan Wai-yee, Director, School of Biomedical Sciences and Prof. Ma Jin-loong, President, Hospital for Reproductive Medicine, SDU will serve as Co-Directors of the Joint Laboratory.

| 3rd CUHK International Symposium on Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine | |
The 3rd CUHK International Symposium on Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine was successfully held at The Prince of Wales Hospital on 11 and 12 November 2013. The Symposium was jointly organized by the Stem Cell and Regeneration Program, School of Biomedical Sciences, CUHK; the Sports Medicine And Regenerative Technology (SMART) Program, Lui Che Woo Institute of Innovative Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, CUHK; Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, CUHK; Centre for Stem Cell and Regeneration, CUHK; and the MOE Key Laboratory for Regenerative Medicine (CUHK-Jinan University). It was well attended by more than 300 participants.

| School of Biomedical Sciences Postgraduate Research Day | |
With the concerted effort of the Organizing Committee of the SBS Postgraduate Research Day and the Graduate Education Office, the School of Biomedical Sciences Postgraduate Research Day 2013 was successfully held on 7th and 8th November 2013. This annual flagship event continues to serve as a platform for our postgraduate students to interact with and learn from their peers and supervisors for four years in a row.

| Animal Handling Course for SBS Staff and Postgraduate Students | |
Following the success of last year's course, the Animal Holding Core under the Core Laboratories Team and the Graduate Division of Biomedical Sciences of the School continued to arrange for our School members a special lecture on handling experimental animals and the use of Laboratory Animal Services Centre (LASEC) facilities on 15 November 2013.

| Participation in the Teaching & Learning Innovation EXPO 2013 | |
In the Teaching and Learning Innovation EXPO 2013 jointly organized by the Centre for Learning Enhancement And Research (CLEAR) and the Information Technology Services Centre (ITSC) on 5 December 2013, members of our Teaching and Learning (T&L) Unit including Dr. Isabel S.S. Hwang, Dr. Ann S.N. Lau and Dr. Rebecca K.Y. Lee attended the event on behalf of our School and shared with other participants their teaching and learning experiences and strategies, as well as the outcomes of their pedagogical innovations.

The SBS Christmas Party 2013 (the Party) was successfully held on 11 December 2013 at the Lo Kwee-Seong Integrated Biomedical Sciences Building. About 300 teaching and non-teaching staff members, postgraduate students and invited guests participated in the Party.

Prof. Lee Tin-lap, Associate Professor of the School of Biomedical Sciences and a member of our "Reproductive, Development and Endocrinology" Program, has recently been appointed as a Fellow Member of the Hong Kong Biotechnology Organization (HKBIO).

The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Jinan University formed a joint delegation and visited the Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Education (MOE), China on 27 September 2013. CUHK members included Prof. Fok Tai-fai, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Chan Wai-yee, Director of School of Biomedical Sciences, and Prof. Wan Chao, Assistant Director of the MOE Key Laboratory for Regenerative Medicine.

Lee, Prof. Wan Chao, Prof. Xia Yin, Prof. Zhao Hui, Dr. Florence M.K. Tang, as well as 15 postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows joined the Postgraduate Research Symposium on Regenerative Medicine 2013 held at Jinan University, Guangzhou on 15 and 16 November 2013.

Following the mutual visits that took place in mid January 2013 and mid April 2013, a 9-member delegation led by Mrs. Marjan J. Oudeman, the President of the Executive Board of Utrecht University (UU), The Netherlands, visited The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on 3 December 2013.

| The Visit of Prof. Bai Chunli, President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences | |
Following last year's visit, Prof. Bai Chunli, President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), together with Mr. Tan Tieniu, Deputy Secretary-General, CAS and Mr. An Jianji, Director, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan Affairs Office, CAS visited The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) again on 5 December 2013.

| Delegation Visit from Shanghai Jiao Tong University | |
During the delegation visit from Shanghai Jiao Tong University to The Chinese University of Hong Kong on 6 December 2013, its members including Prof. Ma Xiao-jing, Associate Dean, School of Life Science and Biotechnology, and Prof. Feng Yan, Chair, Department of Bioscience and Biotechnology, School of Life Science and Biotechnology were arranged to visit the School of Biomedical Sciences and had a meeting with Prof. Fung Kwok-pui, Associate Director (Administration). After the meeting, the guests were guided to tour the major research facilities available in the Lo Kwee-Seong Integrated Biomedical Sciences Building.

| Assessment Meeting of The Chinese University of Hong Kong-Jinan University (CUHK-JNU) Ministry of Education (MOE) Key Laboratory for Regenerative Medicine | |
Following the previous joint visit to the Ministry of Education (MOE) with Jinan University in late September 2013, another delegation led by Prof. Fok Tai-fai, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) paid a follow-up visit to Jinan University (JNU) on 12 and 13 December 2013 and attended the Assessment Meeting of the CUHK-JNU MOE Key Laboratory for Regenerative Medicine (the Key Laboratory) conducted by a team of experts appointed by the MOE.
