Shaw College Departmental Photo Taking Day and Graduation Party 2009

The College Departmental Photo Taking Day was held on 13 March 2009 (Friday) morning, with more than 30 departmental societies organizing their celebration activities for the final year students. Afterwards, there was the first-ever College Graduation Party at the car park of Student Hostel II. Professor Joseph Sung, College Head, officiated at the roasted pig cutting ceremony and toasting with wardens, several staff and some graduating student representatives.  Around 250 students, teachers and friends joined the party and enjoyed the great performances from a dozen of Shaw student societies.



 
Seminar on "Turning Challenges into Opportunities" by Mrs. Margaret Leung

Jointly organized by Shaw College and the Faculty of Business Administration, the seminar "Turning Challenges into Opportunities" on 2 April 2009 (Thursday) was graced with Mrs. Margaret Leung as the guest speaker. Being the Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive Designate of Hang Seng Bank, she shared her life and work experiences to encourage students facing the difficulties positively. More than 100 students and staff participated.

College Assembly by Mr. Cao Ren Chao

The College Assembly by Mr. Cao Ren Chao on "Investment and Life" is held on 6 March 2009 with more than 1,000 student participants. Mr. Cao is the Director and the Columnist of Hong Kong Economic Journal Company Ltd. In the assembly, he expressed his view on the development of Hong Kong economy over the years and shared his investment as well as life experiences. He also encouraged students to be positive and seek opportunities from motherland amid economic turmoil.

College Assembly on "Why you can make a difference?"

Prof. Emily Chan, School of Public Health of CUHK, was invited to deliver a talk "Why you can make a difference?" in College Assembly on 20 March 2009.  Being the President of Medecins San Frontieres (MSF) - Hong Kong (2001-2005), she shared her experiences on providing medical services in the disaster areas of developing countries, and also inspired students of the positive values of respecting human life.

High Table Dinner by Miss Miriam Yeung and Ms Chan Man-yee

It was a great honour for the College to have Miss Miriam Yeung and Ms Chan Man-yee being the guest speakers of High Table Dinners on 10 and 24 March 2009 respectively. More than 100 students and staff joined each occasion. Miss Yeung shared her experiences and views on work and life, and particularly highlighted the importance of family support to her career. Ms Chan had a touching sharing on her story of "When I lost the most precious thing in my life…" and allowed the students to reflect on the meaning of life and death.

Shaw College Singing Contest 2009

With the effort of Student Organizing Committee, Shaw Sing 2009 was held on 25 March 2009 (Wednesday) at Lecture Theatre with great success!  A total of 15 individuals and groups participated in the finals of Solo, Duet and "The Charm of Shaw" sections respectively. An audience of 400 cheered for their favourite contestants and enjoyed a wonderful night.

The winners of each section were as follows:
Solo section: Li Ka Yan (BBA/1)
Duet section: Cheung Wai Hung (MED/1) and Lam Yip Cheung (MED/1)
"The Charm of Shaw" section: Shaw ACE Group
"My Favourite" Award: Li Ka Yan (BBA/1)

Winning Champions in Inter-Collegiate Competitions

The College Rowing Team clinched all champions in CU Rowing Championships (including Men's, Women's and overall champions) this year. To conclude, the College Sports Teams have obtained a total of eight inter-collegiate champions in the academic year of 2008-2009 and recorded the maximum number of champions among four colleges for the 2nd consecutive year. Congratulations to all team members as well as the coaches for their outstanding achievements!

Winning Award by Shaw College Toastmasters Club

Mr. Lo Tak Tsun, Edmund (PSY/1) of Shaw College Toastmasters Club has won the Second Runner-up of Table Topic Contest in CUHK Joint-College Speech Contest on 14 March 2009 (Saturday). Edmund was glad to receive this award, as it was his first time to join a speech competition. The College expresses its heartfelt congratulations to Edmund, and look forward to seeing more achievements of the Club in future!

Outing to Tung Ping Chau

The activity was jointly organized by Shaw College Environmental Enhancement Committee and Eco-education and Resources Centre on 14 March 2009 (Saturday).  In the activity, eco-tour guide introduced to 23 participants about the ecology, the formation of island, and different types of plants such as cactus. Participants were attracted by the beautiful scenery there, and they took many great photos during the trip!

The 20th Executive Committee of Shaw College Student Union

After four years of absence of an Executive Committee of Shaw College Student Union,  "Shaw Runner 追逸", the only cabinet standing for election, was elected as the Executive Committee by 790 votes of confidence vs 6 votes of no confidence, with 9 abstentions and 14 invalid ballots in February 2009.  A total of 819 students had cast their votes.  The Inauguration Ceremony of the Executive Committee was successfully held on 16 March 2009 (Monday) in Fu Zung Centre. Prof. Joseph Sung, College Head, Prof. Gordon Cheung, Dean of Students, wardens and several staff were present to witness this meaningful moment. In addition, the Joint Student Union Inauguration Ceremony, which was co-organized by the Student Unions of CUHK and those of all Colleges, was also held on 19 March 2009 (Thursday) at The Beacon.
