From the Editor
We are pleased to bring to you Issue 12 of the College Newsletter, which summarizes the events and achievements from July 2015 onwards. CW Chu College became full-fledged in September 2015, when the fourth cohort of students joined us. This event marks an important milestone in the College's history. Our Founding students are now in their final year (except for students in programmes that take five or more years). We look forward to their graduation and will welcome them as the first cohort of College alumni in 2016.

Founders' Day and Naming Ceremony of the Marina Tse Chu Building
CW Chu College celebrated its Founders' Day and held the Naming Ceremony of the Marina Tse Chu Building on 12 November 2015.

College Orientation Camp
The College Orientation Camp (O'Camp) is the very first activity that introduces the first-year students to life in the University and the College. It also aims to develop among new students a sense of belonging to the College community, and to help them become familiar with the support available, both emotional and material, as they go through an important transition in life.

Incoming Exchange Students (Term 1, 2015–16)
In Term 1 of the academic year 2015–16, CW Chu College received 30 incoming exchange students (15 male and 15 female) from various origins, including Chile, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain, Sweden, The Netherlands, UK and US. Nearly half of them will stay at the College for the whole academic year.

CWC Festival: CWC300
To celebrate the College's reaching full strength for the first time, the College Student Union (SU) launched the CWC Festival 'CWC300' from 15 to 23 September 2015, with a series of interesting events.

Residents' Association Activities
Freshmen's O'Night
To help new students adapt to hostel and university life, the Residents' Association organized an orientation night for freshmen on 17 September 2015. Through ice-breaking and collaborative games, residents got to know each other, thereby establishing harmonious relationships.

Peer Mentoring Program

The Peer Mentoring Program was launched by The Independent Learning Centre (ILC) in collaboration with the College, to help new students in their transition to university life, by offering individual support from an upper-year student trained by ILC and the Office of Student Affairs.

The Honour Code Pledging Ceremony
The Honour Code Pledging Ceremony for the new students of the 2015 cohort was held at the 4th session of Extended Orientation on 25 September 2015. Prof Stephen Hall, advisor of the Student Honour Code Committee (SHCC), was invited as the commissioner to witness the pledging session. He also introduced to the new students the history of the Honour Code system in tertiary institutions overseas and its development in the College.

Internship Scheme (Summer 2015)

In summer 2015, over 28 summer internship opportunities exclusively for students of the College were sourced from 15 organizations across various sectors, such as administration, finance, marketing, media, product development, research and development, sales and sourcing, and social services. A total of 13 students were selected as interns after interviews by the companies concerned. In addition, several other students obtained internship opportunities through their mentors in the College Mentorship Scheme.

Summer Programme at Utrecht University, The Netherlands

Established in 1636, Utrecht University is one of the oldest universities in the Netherlands and one of the largest in Europe. Utrecht University organized a two-week Summer Programme in 2015, with courses open to students from abroad. Through the GOAL Programme of UC, five CWC students joined the Programme and studied in Utrecht University in summer 2015.

College Service Team
Summer Service Project
With support from the I • CARE Service Projects Funding Scheme and the DH Chen Foundation, the CW Chu College Service Team 2014–15, comprising nine students, was formed and launched the project entitled ʻUnderstanding Socially Disadvantaged School Youths Through a Social Service Endeavour 2015ʼ in the summer of 2015, the third in a series that began in 2013.

Outstanding Service Awards for Tertiary Students 2014–15

Yip Ching Yi Chesley, a Year 4 student, received the Outstanding Service Awards for Tertiary Students 2014–15, in recognition of her contributions to the community and commitment to social services. The Award Presentation Ceremony was held on 6 September 2015.

University Lecture on Civility 'Small Loans for a Big Future'

On 14 October 2015, Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus visited CUHK and gave a lecture on campus, titled 'Small Loans for a Big Future', to share his experience in social enterprise.

General Education Best Essay Award 2014–15

College student Miss Zhang Xian (Year 3, Economics) was selected as an award winner of the General Education Best Essay Award 2014–15.

The Esther Yewpick Lee Millennium Scholarship 2016

Miss Ma Ming Yan (Carissa), a year 4 student from CW Chu College, has been awarded The Esther Yewpick Lee Millennium Scholarship 2016.

Language Enhancement Programme
Toastmasters Taster Sessions
College students improved their public speaking and presentation skills in three Toastmasters Taster Sessions conducted in Term 1, 2015–16. They gave prepared speeches, impromptu talks and speech evaluation, developed English speaking skills, built confidence, and made friends.

Wing Chun Class
A total of 25 students, including exchange students, participated in the Wing Chun Classes in Term 1, 2015–16. Four classes were held from 30 September to 28 October 2015, taught by Mr Thomas Wong, a professional Wing Chun coach. Participants learnt Wing Chun concepts and close-range combat skills, gaining a greater understanding of Chinese martial arts and Chinese culture.

Communal Dinners
First Communal Dinner with four cohorts of students
The first communal dinner in Term 1, 2015–16, held on 8 September 2015 at the College Multi-Purpose Hall, was the first time with four cohorts of students in CW Chu College. Over 30 tables were set up with hot and fresh dishes. College teachers and students, including local, mainland and international students, enjoyed a Chinese style dinner offered by the new caterer.

College Activities

Master Meets New Students

Three casual meetings were held on 17, 21 and 29 September 2015, where Prof Kenneth Young, College Master, had a cordial exchange with new students on College activities, planning and development. The event was organized in three language sessions (Cantonese, Putonghua and English) to encourage spontaneous interactions.

Orientation Day for New Students 2015

The Chinese University of Hong Kong organized the New Student Orientation Day on 11 August 2015. Newly admitted students paid their first visit to the CUHK campus in the capacity of CUHK students. Prof Kenneth Young, College Master, and Prof Thomas Au, Chair of the Admissions, Scholarships & Financial Aid Committee, welcomed students at an all-day consultation area, and hosted two talks to introduce the College's features in detail, including its vision, full residence policy, the concept of the Honour Code, the College premises and facilities, as well as a range of learning opportunities available to students. Ms CHOI Azura Yuk Chin, a year 4 student, one of the student ambassadors, shared her joyful encounters at the College and gave sincere advice to the new students.

Delegations from Shanghai University and Shantou University
Two university delegations visited CW Chu College in July 2015 (25 students and teachers from Shanghai University on 17 July, 30 students and teachers from Shantou University on 23 July). The delegations learnt about the University's College system and were captivated by the architectural design.
