Cross-Strait Forum on Humanities and Social Sciences, a joint academic initiative among the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), Peking University (PKU), Fudan University, Nanjing University (NJU), Taiwan University (NTU) and Taiwan Central University (NCU) was held in Beijing from 1 to 2 November 2014 at CASS. A delegation of CUHK participated in the event and joined the second Board Meeting of the Forum.
The delegation was led by Prof. Fanny Cheung, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, who was accompanied by Prof. Fung Tung, Associate Vice-President and Dean of Social Science; Prof. Leung Yuen-sang, Dean of Arts; and Prof. Chiu Wing Kai Stephen, Co-Director of the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies.
Theme of the Forum this year was 'Equity and Development', covering the analysis of relationship between equity and development, with specific focus on Chinese society and comparison of the issue in Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Seventeen scholars presented papers on the theme. The Forum, attracted over 200 participants to attend, was convened to link scholars and students in related fields to share their views and exchange ideas to promote social-cultural understanding and integration among the three regions.
The Cross-Strait Forum on Humanities and Social Science was initially developed by CUHK, NJU and NCU in 2007. In order to fully utilize the inter-disciplinary dialogues in Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan to foster academic exchange in humanities and social sciences, CUHK took the initiative to expand the Forum by inviting more member universities and research organizations across the regions. A collaboration agreement among the member institutions was concluded by senior members from the 7 institutions at the opening ceremony of the 2014 Forum, comprising Prof. Li Yang, Vice President of CASS; Prof. Lin Shangli, Vice President of Fudan University, Prof. Yang Zhong, Vice President of NJU, Prof. Chang Ching-Ray, Vice President of NTU, Prof. Gin-Rong Liu, Vice President of NCU and Prof. Liu Wei, Executive Vice-President of PKU. The members participated in the second Board Meeting on 2 November 2014 to share views on further direction of the Forum and devise plans to enhance coordination. The first Board Meeting of the Forum was held in CUHK on 3 March 2014.
