Sharing by Visiting Student

Li Zhenliang, a PhD student of Chinese Language and Literature Deparment of Zhejiang University, started his 7-month studies in CUHK since September 2019, through the student interflow programme “Mainland China and Taiwan Visiting Student Programme”. Li shared with us his experience during the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic in CUHK.

“I was a visiting student in The Chinese University of Hong Kong from September 2019 to March 2020. No more than a month after the beginning of spring semester of 2020, we were influenced by the the impact of Coronavirus outbreak. Because winter holiday in Hong Kong was quite late, the epidemic situation of mainland China had been very serious and so I was stranded in CUHK. In February, due to the impact of the Spring Festival holiday and the Coronavirus, the campus was almost empty. All facilities were closed, and my roommates all went home. The supermarket on campus was still open and I could cook in the dormitory. The course were delivered online. I had class and studied by myself in the dormitory.

The Office of Academic Links (China) was helpful and care so much about the visiting students from mainland. They provided us with the information of masks on WeChat and arranged a single room for me. In March, the University announced resuming of operation. The awareness of disease prevention has been increased. Everyone kept their seats away. The staff mopped the floor with disinfector every morning. At the end of March, my visiting period was nearing the end and I returned to the Mainland.

In short, it was a special experience. Coronavirus is unpredictable, but everyone is working hard to minimize its impact. The University and teachers are taking various measures to ensure that our learning can continue. I sincerely thank them for their efforts.”

OALC launched the Mainland and Taiwan Visiting Scholars and Visiting Students Programmes in 2008 and 2011 respectively to strengthen academic exchange and collaboration between CUHK and its cross-strait partners. Students and scholars from CUHK's partner institutions with university collaboration agreements are welcome to apply for the two programmes.
