Engineering team's solar car won the Renewable Energy Capture & Conversion Efficiency Award

The CUHK solar car team, "The CUE", consisting of 14 students, won the "Renewable Energy Capture & Conversion Efficiency Award" at the "New Energy New Generation" Solar Car Competition (tertiary education category). Held in January 2016, the competition was organised by the Environment Bureau and Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, HKSAR Government.

Led by Prof. REN Wei and assessors LEUNG Yun Yee, CHEUK Chi Ming (Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering), the team designed and built the University's first-ever solar energy powered vehicle that rides efficiently with minimal air resistance. The car's carbon-fibre body helps ensure its light weight.

Another feature of the car is its ability to transform. When parked, the car is able to extend a further 3 sets of solar panels. Even when 'extended' the car can still fit comfortably within a regular parking space, and as it is able to self-charge without the need of electric charging station, so it is ideal for a place like Hong Kong, which has so few charging stations — yet plenty of sun.
