Professor Rocky Tuan, Vice-Chancellor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) visited Guangzhou from 9 to 10 June for the 12th China Bioindustry Convention. He gave a keynote presentation and interacted with mainland officials and scholars from all around the world during the activities. The CUHK delegation also included Professor Jack Cheng, Choh-Ming Li Research Professor of Orthopaedics and Traumatology and Ms. Wing Wong, Director of Academic Links (China).
Themed "Toward a New Era of Biological Economy: Innovation, Benefit the Human and Sustainable Development", the Forum focused on discussions about the latest advancements of biomedical sciences and technologies, as well as challenges and opportunities brought to the bio-industry. It attracted over 10,000 academic members and participants from more than 30 countries and regions including China, USA, Russia, France, Israel, and Japan. President Tuan shared his knowledge and research insights with participants in his keynote speech entitled "Advances in Biofabrication: Organ / Tissue Chips and Regenerative Medicine – Stem Cells and Biomimetic Materials for Skeletal Tissue Engineering and Regeneration".
President Tuan also met with Dr. Zhang Shuofu, Party Secretary of the Guangzhou Municipal Committee during the trip to consolidate efforts in research collaboration and exchange of high-calibre talents under the initiative of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Both sides expressed visions in building new platforms for the expansion of cooperation among industry, academia and research sector. At the Opening Ceremony of the Guanzhou International Biological Forum, President Tuan signed the "Agreement for Collaboration Plan in the Establishment of the Guangzhou Regenerative Medicine and Health Guangdong Laboratory (GDL) - CUHK Advance Institute for Regenerative Medicine" with Professor Pei Duanqing, Executive Deputy Director of GDL. The signing was witnessed by Dr. Zhang, Professor Cheng as well as other participating scholars and veterans, ensuring the joint endevours in establishing systematic platform for regenerative medicine and health.
CUHK has concluded a wide range of collaborative initiatives with universities and research organizations in Guangdong Province. Around 30 joint research units have been established, including State Key Laboratory, Ministry of Education Key Laboratory, as well as research extension unit at the national level in humanities and social sciences. This visit established stronger links between the Guangzhou Municipal Government and the University, enhancing mutual understanding for the expansion of partnership developments.
