Sharing by Participating Students of Winter Activities under CU in Mainland & Taiwan 2017
In collaboration with various mainland partner institutions, Office of Academic Links (China) (OALC) coordinated 23 student interflow programmes during the winter break of 2017, sending over 320 CUHK students to mainland China. The following are extracts of sharing articles from our participating students (edited):
Miss Tess Tam (Participant of "The 14th Moonlet Winter Programme" by Harbin Institute of Technology)
While the cold front was taking its toll, we were welcomed by hospitable friends from HIT, who gave us handy tips on how to confront the bone-chilling weather. Before I embarked on the journey, I mistaken thought that wearing multiple layers is the best way to keep myself warm, but actually this notion is only applicable to places where day-night temperature difference is huge, e.g. summer in Australia. Perhaps due to the bone-chilling weather there, we found that local people tend to possess a straight and direct way of speaking, and they usually just spill their thoughts right away without exchanging pleasantries.
Miss Nicole Liang (Participant of "Study Camp on Intangible Cultural Heritage" by Nanjing University)
Nantong is a city that many would miss out, or simply glance through, when deciding on a list of potential travel destinations in China – it is not a typical city you will find tourists at, nor does it market itself as a tourist city. Nevertheless, one will be surprised by the abundance of cultural outposts and the richness of craftsmanship and artisanship in this industrial city that sits right across Shanghai, separated by the Yangtze River. Coined as the 'First Modern City of China', the remnants of the city's rampant modernization during the late 19th Century to early 20th Century has incubated a lineage of dedicated educators, craftsman, artisans and innovators who are simultaneously the guardians of the intangible heritage passed through several generations – kinship or not. Our trip has provided us with exclusive opportunities to engage in an array of traditional cultural practices and a glimpse at the values they uphold.
Mr Maxwell Lau (Participant of "Cultural Study Camp to Guangdong" by South China University of Technology)
My initial intention to participate in this trip is to take a break from the endless work during semester break, but what I gained from this trip is definitely more than just taking a rest. ... Special thanks and tremendous respect are given to the mainland students. They are taking care of us in every single bit, hoping to make the trip smooth and to make us happy. What I appreciated most is their attitude towards this trip. Even though some of them are just of similar age to us, they are paying 110% effort and spending much time on working out things that could be just voluntary to them. It is not about where to visit, but about how I visit the places - the mind to explore, to ask and to share.
