BME Students Win HKXF FYP+ Supporting Scheme

An undergraduate student Mr. OOI Hon Son (BME 18') from the Department of Biomedical Engineering and a PhD student Mr. PANG Tak Keung from the School of Biomedical Science (BME 16') won the 2018 HKXF FYP+ Supporting Scheme.

The scheme is a rung to entrepreneurial incubation for winners to develop a commercial platform. Co-supervised by Prof. HO Megan Yi-Ping from the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Prof. WAN Chao from the School of Biomedical Sciences, the team pitched a cross-disciplinary approach to cardiac muscle tissue regeneration which amalgamates traditional photolithographic engineering and current advances in stem cell technology. By using photo- and soft-lithography to create high resolution patterns of iPSC embedded soft hydrogels, the team aim to recapitulate microscale morphologies specific to the targeted tissue type. Differentiation into myocardium can be subsequently performed via chemical induction. This induction will be carried out in specially designed incubation chambers which is designed to allow microfluidic flow control over extended timespans.
