Significant Special Collections Acquisition

Confucius Sinarum Philosophus (Confucius, the Chinese philosopher) 1687
Confucius Sinarum Philosophus is a magnificently printed folio, published from the manuscript in the Royal Library by orders of Louis XIV of France, (1638–1715). It includes translations of three Confucian canons: Great Learning(大學), Doctrine of the Mean (中庸), Analects(論語) and a life of Confucius with a full-page, icon-like portrait of the sage. Since Ricci rejected Mencian interpretations of Confucian classics, the Mencius (孟子) was not included. It was only with the publication of Confucius Sinarum Philosophus in 1687 that European scholars began noticing these great works in China. This valuable title is now in UL Special Collections (Call No. PL2489.6.L3 C6 1687).
