People with complex communication needs, including those with cerebral palsy, dementia, and developmental disorders, do not possess the necessary cognitive-motor abilities to conduct daily verbal communications. Telephone conversations were infeasible for them in the past.
Prof. Rosanna Chan of the Department of Information Engineering collaborated with SAHK, a leading NGO in Hong Kong serving over 15,000 families annually, to develop EasyDial - a first-of-its-kind cloud augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) service.
EasyDial offers a mobile app interface to help users carry out real-time telephone-like conversations, e.g. by uttering messages into a remote receiver in the form of image vocabularies and synthesized speech outputs. In addition, users can personalise their contact lists and customize the app interface.
