Barrier-free Learning Environment at CUHK

ITSC has been working on establishing a barrier-free learning environment for every student.  This year, we assist in the set-up of Barrier-free Computer Workstations at User Areas (1/F, Pi Chiu Building), Learning Commons (6/F, WMY Building) and the CUHK Libraries.  The workstations include computers with larger monitors, text-to-speech software and zoom-text magnifier for students with special educational needs (SEN).  What's more, advanced optical character recognition (OCR) scanning and braille printing are available in some libraries.

To ensure every student enjoys our service, a portable induction loop is now placed at the Service Desk (Room 109 Pi Ch'iu Building) to facilitate communications between students with hearing impairment and our staff.  By using the T-coil in the hearing aids, the speech signal is transmitted to the listener clearly with surrounding noise minimized. It helps hearing aid users communicate more efficiently with our staff, even if the environment is noisy.  We wish to take a step forward in providing an accessible learning environment for all students.  Don't hesitate to approach us for questions!
