Visit of Vice-Minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology

On 19 August, an 11-member delegation led by Ms. Chen Xiaoya, Vice-Minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China (MOST) visited the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). The purpose was to understand the research development of the University as well as its State Key Laboratories (SKLs). Apart from the delegates from MOST, the delegation comprised representatives from the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong SAR (LOCPG) and Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC) including Mr. Cao Guoying, Deputy Director General of Education, Science and Technology Department, LOCPG, and Dr. Cecilia Pang, Biotechnology Director of ITC.

The delegation was warmly welcomed by CUHK. The delegation met with CUHK Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof. Benjamin Wah; Pro-Vice-Chancellors Prof. Jack Cheng, Prof. Henry N.C. Wong, and Prof. Xu Yangsheng. The delegation also met with representatives from the four SKLs in CUHK including Prof. Kung Hsiang-fu, Director and Prof. Anthony Chan, Associate Director of the SKL of Oncology in South China; Prof. Samuel Sun, Director of the SKL of Agrobiotechnology; Prof. Leung Ping-chung, Director, and Prof. Fung Kwok-pui, Associate Director of the SKL of Phytochemistry and Plant Resources in West China; and Prof. Xie Zuowei of the SKL on Synthetic Chemistry.

 

In the meeting, Prof. Henry Wong gave a summary to the guests about the recent development of the University, while representatives from the SKLs gave introductions on recent research progress of their respective laboratories. Thereafter, the guests toured the SKL of Oncology in South China (CUHK) under the guidance of the representatives of the Laboratory to obtain more information about the projects of the Laboratory.

 

Ms. Chen was deeply impressed by the achievements of the University and the major progress of the SKLs. She expressed MOST would offer its support to the University to continue its deep collaborations with universities and research institutes on the mainland. The visit provided a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas and to build up links.
