Athletes from The Chinese University performed brilliantly in Taiwan, Hubei, and Anhui this summer. They walked away with medals, including gold in the Men's Double Division A, silver in the Ladies' Single Division A, and bronze in the Mixed Double Division A and Men's Team Division 1A of the National Universities Badminton Championship; and bronze again in Women's Team, Division A of the National Universities Tennis Championships. CUHK teams were also the second runners-up of both Men's Teams and Women's Teams in the International Handball Invitation Tournament of Taiwan University.
The CUHK men's and women's handball teams took part in the 2006 Taiwan University International Handball Invitation Tournament from 5th to 9th July at Taiwan University. Both teams beat over 300 handball players from 18 tertiary institutions from Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan, to become second runner-up in their group. The goal keeper of the men's team, Tsang Hing-lai (Year 2, Economics) and member Lau Wan-tat (Year 1, Statistics) were respectively awarded the titles of 'Best Goal Keeper' and 'Most Popular Handball Player' in the prize presentation ceremony. Later the seven members of the CUHK men's and women's tennis teams went to Hubei for the 11th National Universities Tennis Championships from 17th to 23rd July at the Wuhan Institution of Physical Education. A total of 512 athletes from 56 tertiary institutions all over China took part in the event. After winning the preliminary round, the women's team went on to beat Jinan University in the quarter-finals, and subsequently Tsinghua University (last year's doubles champion) to clinch the bronze. This year, 456 athletes from 47 tertiary institutions all over China assembled at the China University of Science and Technology from 12th to 18th August, for the 10th National Universities Badminton Championship. During the tournament, the temperature was close to 40 degrees Celsius, and possibly higher in the gymnasium which had neither air-conditioning nor fan. Many players suffered from heat stroke. Despite this, the CUHK men's team, having been promoted to Division 1A from Division 1B last year, walked away with bronze; while Yuen Yuen-kin and Pang Chun-yue, last year's first runners-up, clinched the championship title in the men's doubles. Fung Ying was the first runner-up in the ladies' singles, after being in third place for two years. Then for the third year, Fung and Yuen won bronze in the mixed doubles event.
