Inauguration Ceremony for the Joint Laboratory on Biosocial Psychology between CUHK and Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and the Chinese Academic Sciences (CAS) joined hands again in building research laboratory to enhance research productivity and competitiveness. The CUHK-Institute of Psychology (IP) CAS Joint Laboratory on Biosocial Psychology was established on 3 December 2015 in CUHK.

Accompanied by Prof. Bai Chun Li, President of CAS, Prof. Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor of CUHK, officiated at the establishment ceremony. Prof. Sung expressed his gratitude to CAS for supporting the joint initiative and stated that the establishment will provide a platform for collaboration between scholars of CUHK and IPCAS to fully exploit the strengths in biosocial psychology, fostering collaborative efforts and opportunities to a new height.

The collaboration between CUHK and CAS dates back to the 1980. Since then both parties have carried out a variety of projects in different areas and established 9 joint research units.  The establishment of the joint laboratory is the 10th one and signifies a  milestone of the collaboration efforts expanding reseach areas from science, medicine, engineering to social sciences.  Scholars from the IPCAS and the Department of Psychology of CUHK have been collaborating closely during the past years. The joint laboratory will help formalize the ties between the two parties to achieve research excellence.

CUHK Establishes Joint Research Centre for Positive Social Science with Taiwan Cheng Kung University (NCKU)

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) established its first joint research center in Social Science with universities in Taiwan on 7 December 2015. CUHK-Taiwan Cheng Kung University (NCKU) Joint Research Centre for Positive Social Science had its inauguration ceremony held in NCKU. Prof. Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor of CUHK, officiated at the ceremony with Prof. Huey-Jen Jenny Su, President of NCKU. A collaboration agreement was also concluded by the two Presidents.

Both CUHK and NCKU have been pioneers in positive social science research for many years.  With the aim to seed and grow an innovative and rigorous integrative positive social science, the establishment of the joint research centre will leverage on the shared research goals and existing complementary strengths of both universities to promote creative synergy through knowledge sharing and dissemination.

CUHK delegates attending the ceremony included Prof. Fok Tai-Fai, Pro-Vice-Chancellor; Prof. Chiu Chi-yue, Dean of Social Science; Prof. Winnie Mak, Assistant Dean of Social Science; Prof. Ng Mee Kam, Vice-Chairman of the Department of Geography and Resource Management; Prof. Hong Ying Yi, Choh-Ming Li Professor of Marketing; Prof. Hoyan Hang-fung from the Department of Chinese Language and Literature; Prof. Arthur Mak and Prof. Chen Shih Chi from the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering; and Prof. Helene Fung from the Department of Psychology.  During the visit, the first meeting of CUHK-NCKU Partnership Steering Committee was held. Representatives from joint teams in positive social science, biomedical engineering, cultural neuroscience, literary studies as well as  academic links reported the progress of the projects and discussed possible plans to further collaboration. The meeting was co-chaired by Prof. Sung and Prof. Su who indicated their support to the Committee, serving as a platform to facilitate exchange and enhance sustainable partnership development.

The 8th Meeting of Steering Committee on Partnership Development between CUHK and Sun Yat-sen University

The 8th meeting of Steering Committee on Partnership Development between The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) was held on 15 December 2015 in SYSU. The meeting was co-chaired by Prof. Wei Minghai, Vice President of SYSU and Prof. Fok Tai Fai, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of CUHK. At the meeting, more than 30 members from 14 joint projects in Oncology, Computer Sciences and Information Engineering, Biochemistry, Sociology, Water Resources, Law, Gastroenterology, History,Mathematics, academic exchanges and student affairs reported the progresses of the projects and reviewed the possibilities to facilitate deep collaboration. New research areas in Public Health and Environmental Science as well as in Social Economics were explored during the meeting.

SYSU is one of the major partners of CUHK. Since the establishment of partnership in 1981, CUHK and SYSU have carried out a wide range of collaborative projects in student exchange, research collaboration and academic programme. In 2006, CUHK established the State Key Laboratory in Oncology in South China in collaboration with SYSU. In 2011, CUHK-SYSU Centre for Historical Anthropology was launched as the first national-level joint centre in humanities and social sciences in CUHK and Hong Kong. The Steering Committee on Partnership Development was set up by the two universities in 2008 to forge effective and sustainable relationship.
