Joint-University Algo FX Trading Challenge 2021

QFRM student Vincent Cheng won the first place in the “Best Return”, “Best Sharpe”, and “Best Strategy Design” categories in the Joint-University Algo FX Trading Challenge 2021 (Global) organised by the Algo Challenge Association.

Approximately 200 contestants from prestigious institutions in Hong Kong and all around the world participated in this global event, which started in November 2021.

“It is an honour to be awarded first place in all three categories of the competition. In this challenge, we coded an algorithmic forex trading strategy, which went through trading simulations on both historical and live market data. We struggled to develop trading strategies in the beginning due to the incredible efficiency of the forex market. After many failed attempts, we hit upon the idea that utilising certain global economic factors conferred a slight statistical edge. Developing this idea, we created trading signals based on various macroeconomic data series. This was a wonderful opportunity to put what we learned into practice, such as finance, statistics, programming, risk management, and even deck design and presentation skills.” – Vincent Cheng
