Six Distinguished Persons to Be Honoured by CUHK
The Chinese University of Hong Kong will confer honorary doctorates on six distinguished persons at its Sixty-second Congregation for the Conferment of Degrees on Thursday, 8th December 2005. The six honorary graduands are Mr. Vincent Cheng Hoi-chuen, distinguished banker and chairman of HSBC; Prof. Ambrose King Yeo-chi, renowned sociologist and former vice-chancellor of CUHK; Prof. Li Yihyuan, famous anthropologist, academician of Academia Sinica in Taiwan and chairman of the Chiang Ching Kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange; Dr. Lien Chan, eminent statesman and honorary chairman of the Kuomintang; Dr. Richard J. Roberts, renowned molecular biologist and Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine (1993); and Mr. Wang Daohan, respected senior statesman and president of the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait.

Mr. Vincent Cheng will be conferred the degree of Doctor of Social Science, honoris causa, in recognition of his contributions to the socio-economic development of Hong Kong. An outstanding alumnus and honorary fellow of the Chinese University, Mr. Cheng has provided unstinting support to his alma mater over the years. 

Former vice-chancellor of CUHK and former head of New Asia College, Prof. Ambrose King taught sociology at CUHK for over 35 years. He will be conferred the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, in recognition of his celebrated academic achievements in social science and important contributions to the University and the promotion of Chinese culture.

Prof. Li Yihyuan will be conferred the degree of Doctor of Social Science, honoris causa, in recognition of his accomplishments in humanities studies and his remarkable contributions to the academic development of the Chinese University.

Dr. Lien Chan, former vice-president of Taiwan, former president of the Executive Yuan, and former Chairman of the Kuomintang, will be conferred the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, in recognition of his contributions to the peaceful development of cross-strait relations, the promotion of understanding among the Chinese people, and the advancement of higher education and Chinese culture. 

Dr. Richard J. Roberts will be conferred the degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa, in recognition of his enormous contributions to the advancement of science and higher education, and the generous advice and support he has rendered to the Chinese University in the development of its academic programmes.

Mr. Wang Daohan, former Mayor of Shanghai, will be conferred the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, in recognition of his sustained efforts to promote peaceful cross-strait relations and enhance the well-being of the Chinese people. Mr. Wang has also provided steadfast support to the Chinese University in its development of academic links with universities in Shanghai and the mainland.
