Delegation of Students and Alumni Visits India to Understand Social Business

Yunus Social Business Centre@CUHK, a subsidiary of this Centre, led a delegation of four students and alumni to Bengaluru, India on 27 June - 2 July 2018.  They attended the Social Business Day and paid visits to non-governmental organisations during the trip.

Social Business Day is launched by Prof. Muhammad Yunus, Founder of Grameen Bank and Nobel Peace Laureate 2006.  This year, the event is themed "A World of Three Zeros: Zero Poverty, Zero Unemployment, Zero Net Carbon Emissions" aiming to explore a new economy solution to tackle social issues nowadays.

Through a series of talks, seminar and forums, the participants had learnt different social business models adopted by people worldwide to solve social problems of their home countries.  At the same time, they realised that running a cause-driven business rests on thinking out of the box. By applying different approaches to achieve the social goals, such a business can become sustainable.  This echos what Prof. Yunus said in his opening speech for the Social Business Day, "No problem is beyond human capacity, because those problems are created by human being."

Besides, the delegation visited two local non-governmental organisations namely Karnataka Health Promotion Trust and Quest Alliance.  The former aims at empowering women in India by encouraging them to enter the workforce to earn a living on their own, thus promoting their social status.  The latter focuses on equipping children from underprivileged families with practical life and work skills so that their employment rate will be uplifted.

This India trip not only prompted the participants to re-think the differences among social business, social enterprise and social service, but it also enabled them to look into the cultural and social sides of India.  Above all, the visit has laid a foundation for future collaboration between Yunus Social Business Centre@CUHK and their counterparts in India.
